[reaction: see text] The first highly enantioselective organocatalyzed carbo [3 + 3] cascade cycloaddition of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes is reported. Using this methodology, crotonaldehyde is converted to 6-hydroxy-4-methylcyclohex-1-enecarbaldehyde, which is used in the synthesis of (-)-isopulegol hydrate, (-)-cubebaol, and p-tolualdehyde as well as (-)-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-1-cyclohexene-1-methanol acetate, an intermediate in the total synthesis of lycopodium alkaloid magellanine. Other alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes give rise to chiral cyclohexadienes via formal [4 + 2] reactions.

A strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltite perovskite material was prepared, and used as a recyclable and effective heterogeneous catalyst for the direct oxidative coupling of alkenes with aromatic aldehydes to produce α,β-unsaturated ketones. The reaction afforded high yields in the presence of di--butylperoxide as oxidant. Single oxides or salts of strontium, lanthanum and cobalt, and the undoped perovskite offered a lower catalytic activity than the strontium-doped perovskite.

Article Synopsis
  • COPD is a significant global health issue primarily caused by cigarette smoke exposure, which disrupts airway hydration by affecting proteins like SPLUNC1.
  • Cigarette smoke exposure causes SPLUNC1 to aggregate irreversibly and lose its ability to regulate the epithelial Na channel (ENaC), leading to reduced airway surface liquid (ASL) hydration.
  • SPX-101, a synthetic peptide mimicking SPLUNC1, can effectively restore ASL hydration and reduce ENaC activity even after exposure to cigarette smoke, showing potential as a new treatment for COPD-related mucus dehydration.

Oxidative DNA damage repair in mammalian cells: a new perspective.

DNA Repair (Amst)

Oxidatively induced DNA lesions have been implicated in the etiology of many diseases (including cancer) and in aging. Repair of oxidatively damaged bases in all organisms occurs primarily via the DNA base excision repair (BER) pathway, initiated with their excision by DNA glycosylases. Only two mammalian DNA glycosylases, OGG1 and NTH1 of E.
