Nitryl chloride (ClNO) is a key precursor of chlorine radicals, influencing atmospheric oxidation and secondary pollutants formation. Few studies have examined the ClNO chemistry from the perspective of the planetary boundary layer. Here, we conducted a vertically resolved investigation of ClNO at six heights (ranging from 5 to 335 m) on a 356 m tower in the Pearl River Delta, China, during winter 2021.

The most well-known hydroxyl radical (OH)-generating system is the classic iron-mediated Fenton reaction. Thiourea has been considered as an efficient OH scavenger and is frequently used to study the role of OH in various biochemical and medical research studies. Here we found that the highly reactive OH can be produced from thiourea and HO through a metal-independent pathway, as measured by electron spin resonance (ESR) secondary radical spin-trapping and fluorescent methods.

The synthesis of polymers with well-defined composition, architecture, and functionality has long been a focal area of research in the field of polymer chemistry. The advancement of controlled radical polymerization (CRP) has facilitated the synthesis of precise polymers, which are endowed with new properties and functionalities, thereby exhibiting a wide range of applications. However, radical polymerization faces several challenges, such as oxygen intolerance, and common thermal initiation methods may lead to side reactions and depolymerization.

Computational models of atmospheric composition are not always physically consistent. For example, not all models respect fundamental conservation laws such as conservation of atoms in an interconnected chemical system. In well performing models, these unphysical deviations are often ignored because they are frequently minor, and thus only need a small nudge to perfectly conserve mass.

Sunlight irradiation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface water results in the production of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs). This process is inevitably influenced by co-existing metal ions in aquatic environments; However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the effect of co-existing copper ion (Cu) on PPRIs produced by irradiation of DOM was systematically investigated, because Cu is a typical redox transient cation and has strong affinity to DOM.
