Genitalia are conspicuously variable, even in closely related taxa that are otherwise morphologically very similar. Explaining genital diversity is a longstanding problem that is attracting renewed interest from evolutionary biologists. New studies provide ever more compelling evidence that sexual selection is important in driving genital divergence. Importantly, several studies now link variation in genital morphology directly to male fertilization success, and modern comparative techniques have confirmed predicted associations between genital complexity and mating patterns across species. There is also evidence that male and female genitalia can coevolve antagonistically. Determining mechanisms of genital evolution is an important challenge if we are to resolve current debate concerning the relative significance of mate choice benefits and sexual conflict in sexual selection.

Physiological or genetic assays and computational modeling are valuable tools for understanding animals' visual discrimination capabilities. Yet sometimes, the results generated by these methods appear not to jive with other aspects of an animal's appearance or natural history, and behavioral confirmatory tests are warranted. Here we examine the peculiar case of a male jumping spider that displays red, black, white, and UV color patches during courtship despite the fact that, according to microspectrophotometry and color vision modeling, they are unlikely able to discriminate red from black.

Seasonal reproductive dynamics and senescence have profound impacts on male fertility, yet these processes remain understudied in scorpions. This study investigates how reproductive parameters-such as testicular mass, sperm quantity, and viability-change over the course of the reproductive season in males. We found that early-season males exhibited higher sperm quality and testicular mass compared to their older counterparts, suggesting that senescence, rather than reproductive effort, drives the decline in sperm viability.

The zig-zag eel exhibits both sexual dimorphism and sex reversal, making it crucial to understand the mechanisms of sex determination and differentiation. Additionally, the wild populations of the zig-zag eel are significantly declining, emphasizing the need for urgent conservation efforts.
