This descriptive and exploratory research aims to draw the profile of women between 40 and 49 years at a Family Health Center in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, in view of the following variables: registration at the service, health insurance and smear realization date, among others. Data were collected in the patient records of 213 women. Epi Info 6.0 was used for data input and analysis and database creation. Results display that 49% of the women realized the pap smear at least once in the period from 2000 to 2003. 54.5% of them did not have a health insurance plan and smear realization rates are higher in this group. It was concluded that the organization of health care in accordance with the Family Health model favors adhesion to this preventive test. We recommend that new studies be carried out to obtain a more representative profile of the population that is registered at the service.

Machine learning-based systems have become instrumental in augmenting global efforts to combat cervical cancer. A burgeoning area of research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the cervical screening process, primarily through the exhaustive examination of Pap smears, traditionally reliant on the meticulous and labor-intensive analysis conducted by specialized experts. Despite the existence of some comprehensive and readily accessible datasets, the field is presently constrained by the limited volume of publicly available images and smears.

This paper aims to propose an approach leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to diagnose thalassemia through medical imaging. The idea is to employ a U-net neural network architecture for precise erythrocyte morphology detection and classification in thalassemia diagnosis. This accomplishment was realized by developing and assessing a supervised semantic segmentation model of blood smear images, coupled with the deployment of various data engineering techniques.

Background: G-quadruplex (G4)/hemin DNAzymes with conversion of substrates into colorimetric readouts are well recognized as convenient biocatalysis tools in sensor development. However, the previously developed colorimetric G4/hemin DNAzymes are diffusive substrate-based DNAzymes (DSBDs). The current colorimetric DSBDs have several drawbacks including high dosage (∼mM) of diffusive substrates (DSs), colorimetric product toxicity, and single colorimetric readout without tolerance to fluctuation of experimental factors and background.

Background: Accurate, sensitive, and rapid identification of leukemia cells in blood and bone marrow is of paramount significance for clinical diagnosis. An integrative technique combining traditional cytomorphology with immunophenotyping was proposed to improve the diagnostic efficiency in leukemia. On account of high photostability, biocompatibility, and signal-to-background ratio, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent labels have drawn substantial research scrutiny in immunolabeling.

The recommendation for cervical screening is that it should be based on human papillomavirus (HPV) molecular testing. For all screening programs, attention to quality assurance is required to fully realize the benefits. Internationally recognized quality assurance recommendations for HPV-based screening are needed that are ideally applicable for a variety of settings, including in low- and middle-income countries.
