Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often leads to elevated blood glucose levels and lipid metabolism disorder, which is generally accompanied by dysbiosis of gut microbiota and metabolic dysfunction.

Methods: In this study, a mouse model of T2DM was established by feeding a high-fat/sucrose diet combined with injecting a low dose of streptozotocin. The aim of this study was to analyze the regulatory effect of Suaeda salsa extract (SSE) on T2DM and its effect on the intestinal flora of mice.

Cardiometabolic index and mortality risks: elevated cancer and reduced cardiovascular mortality risk in a large cohort.

Lipids Health Dis

December 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University (Army Medical University), No.30 Gautanyan Zhengjie, Shapingba District, Chongqing, China.

Background: With metabolic disorders on the rise globally, the cardiometabolic index (CMI) has emerged as a crucial predictor of mortality risks linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. This novel index, which combines lipid metabolism and body composition, is the focus of this study, aimed at exploring its association with all-cause and specific mortality in an all-age adult population.

Methods: A longitudinal cohort study including 5,728 participants aged over 18 from nine cycles between 2001 and 2018 was enrolled and assessed.

The Putative Antilipogenic Role of NRG4 and ERBB4: First Expression Study on Human Liver Samples.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

December 2024

Center for Immunology and Cellular Biotechnology, Institute of Medicine and Life Sciences, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, 236001 Kaliningrad, Russia.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor 4 (ERBB4) and neuregulin 4 (NRG4) have been shown to reduce steatosis and prevent the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in mouse models, but little to nothing is known about their role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in humans. This study is the first to investigate the expression of and mRNAs and their role in lipid metabolism in the livers of individuals with obesity, type 2 diabetes and biopsy-proven NAFLD.

Methods: Liver biospecimens were obtained intraoperatively from 80 individuals.

Berberine alleviates AGEs-induced ferroptosis by activating NRF2 in the skin of diabetic mice.

Exp Biol Med (Maywood)

December 2024

Institute of Disease-Oriented Nutritional Research, Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have adverse effects on the development of diabetic complications. Berberine (BBR), a natural alkaloid, has demonstrated its ability to promote the delayed healing of skin wounds. However, the impact of BBR on AGEs-induced ferroptosis in skin cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms remains unexplored.
