Unlabelled: To report the major intraretinal pathological changes in retinas with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and retinal shortening, 13 human retinal samples from postoperative PVR after primary surgery for retinal detachment were immunostained for vimentin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), cytokeratins, and CD68. One more sample was studied with electron microscopy. Retinal disorganization, neuronal loss, and gliosis were observed in 12 out of 13 samples, but all 13 were positive for GFAP. Muller cell processes showed different degrees of intermediate filament hyperplasia. CD68-positive cells were present in 11 of 13 retinal samples.
Conclusion: A gliotic response plays a major role in retinal shortening in PVR. In addition, the presence of macrophage-like cells in retinal tissues suggests a possible role of these cells in the pathogenesis of this variety of PVR.

Ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2) is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the TPP1 gene, encoding lysosomal tripeptidyl peptidase 1 (TPP1). The classical late-infantile phenotype has an age of onset between 2 and 4 years and is characterized by psychomotor regression, myoclonus, ataxia, blindness, and shortened life expectancy. Vision loss occurs due to retinal degeneration, usually when severe neurological symptoms are already evident.

Global blindness is substantially influenced by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It significantly shortens people's lives and severely impairs their visual acuity. AMD is becoming more common, requiring improved diagnostic and prognostic methods.

Purpose: N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, one of the most common epigenetic modifications in eukaryotic mRNA, has been shown to play a role in the development and function of the mammalian nervous system by regulating the biological fate of mRNA. METTL3, the catalytically active component of the m6A methyltransferase complex, has been shown to be essential in development of in the retina. However, its role in the mature retina remains elusive.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the effect of diabetic retinopathy and melatonin treatment on the relative telomer lengths (RTL) in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells in a streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model.
Background: TL can be used to evaluate diabetes mellitus, its complications, and the effectiveness of its treatment. However, TL assessment has not been performed in retinal cells in a diabetic retinopathy model until now.
