Hofmeister effects in supramolecular and biological systems.

Specific ion effects, representative of near-universal Hofmeister phenomena, are illustrated in three different systems. These are the formation of supramolecular assemblies from cyclodextrins, the optical rotation of L-serine, and the growth rate of two kinds of microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The strong specific ion effects can be correlated with the anion polarizabilities and related physico-chemical parameters. The results show the relevance of dispersion (non-electrostatic) forces in these phenomena.

Under salt stress, plasma membrane proteins regulate ion homeostasis and the balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we investigated the functions of two small membrane proteins-MsRCI2B (tailless) and MsRCI2E (tailed)-encoded by the RCI2 (Rare Cold Inducible 2) gene family in Medicago sativa (alfalfa). We identified the distinct subcellular localization and expression patterns of these proteins under salt stress.

Dectin-1 (CLEC7A), a C-type lectin-like receptor that recognizes β-1,3 glucans, has a key role in the innate immune system. While the lectin domain of mouse Dectin-1 has been solubilized and refolded from inclusion bodies in Escherichia coli, similar refolding of the human Dectin-1 lectin domain is hindered by the formation of misfolded multimers with aberrant intermolecular disulfide bonds. The development of electrode materials for aqueous ammonium-ion supercapacitors (NH-SCs) has garnered significant attention in recent years. Poor intrinsic conductivity, sluggish electron transfer and ion diffusion kinetics, as well as structural degradation of vanadium oxides during the electrochemical process, pose significant challenges for their efficient ammonium-ion storage. In this work, to address the above issues, the core-shell VO·nHO@poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene) composite (denoted as VOH@PEDOT) is designed and prepared by a simple agitation method to boost the ammonium-ion storage of VO·nHO (VOH).
