The freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis has a long research history, but only relatively recently has it emerged as an attractive model organism to study molecular mechanisms in the areas of developmental biology and translational medicine such as learning/memory and neurodegenerative diseases. The species has the advantage of being a hermaphrodite and can both cross- and self-mate, which greatly facilitates genetic approaches. The establishment of body-handedness, or chiromorphogenesis, is a major topic of study, since chirality is evident in the shell coiling.

Anatomical left-right (L/R) asymmetry in C. elegans is established in the four-cell embryo as a result of anteroposterior skewing of transverse mitotic spindles with a defined handedness. This event creates a chiral embryo and ultimately an adult body plan with fixed L/R positioning of internal organs and components of the nervous system.

Directionally asymmetric animals generally exhibit no variation in handedness of whole-body architecture. In contrast, reversed chirality in both coil and entire anatomy has frequently evolved in snails. We demonstrate a nonrandom pattern and deterministic process of chiral evolution, as predicted by the following hypothesis.

Dexloxiglumide is a potent and selective cholecystokinin type 1 (CCK1) receptor antagonist currently under development in a variety of diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia, constipation and gastric emptying disorders. In female patients with constipation-predominant IBS, clinical efficacy has been demonstrated following administration of dexloxiglumide 200 mg three times daily. Dexloxiglumide is rapidly and extensively absorbed after single oral administration in humans with an absolute bioavailability of 48%.

Examination of the association between reproductive isolation and genetic divergence in a variety of organisms is essential for elucidating the mechanisms causing speciation. However, such studies are lacking for hermaphrodites. We measured premating (sexual) isolation in species pairs of the hermaphroditic land snail Albinaria and we compared it with their genetic divergence.
