Isolated fifth internodes of Coleus blumei Benth. were supplied with (3)H-IAA at their apical ends. Microradioautography, using thin sections (0.25-0.5 microns) of Epon embedded tissue and liquid emulsion techniques, revealed extremely specific localization of the acetone-insoluble derivatives of IAA. Changes in the patterns of labeling were followed over periods of 3, 24, and 48 hr at various distances from the source of applied auxin. Progressively basipetal labeling of the cell walls of the youngest xylem elements was evident with time. At the end of 24 hr the label was detected also within the cytoplasm or slime of phloem elements. After 24 to 48 hr, labeling of plastids was evident. The results suggest a continued incorporation of IAA derivatives into cell wall precursors.

Benzene kresoxim-methyl (BKM) is an important methoxyacrylate-based strobilurin fungicide widely used against various phytopathogenic fungi in crops. Uptake, translocation and accumulation of BKM in vegetables remain unknown. This study was designed to investigate uptake, translocation, and accumulation of C-BKM and/or its potential metabolites in Chinese flowering cabbage and water spinach.

The UDP-2,3-diacylglucosamine pyrophosphatase LpxH in the Raetz pathway of lipid A biosynthesis is an essential enzyme in the vast majority of Gram-negative pathogens and an excellent novel antibiotic target. The P-radioautographic thin-layer chromatography assay has been widely used for analysis of LpxH activity, but it is inconvenient for evaluation of a large number of LpxH inhibitors over an extended time period. Here, we report a coupled, nonradioactive LpxH assay that utilizes the recently discovered Aquifex aeolicus lipid A 1-phosphatase LpxE for quantitative removal of the 1-phosphate from lipid X, the product of the LpxH catalysis; the released inorganic phosphate is subsequently quantified by the colorimetric malachite green assay, allowing the monitoring of the LpxH catalysis.

Uptake and translocation of C-Carbamazepine in soil-plant systems.

Environ Pollut

December 2018

Institute of Nuclear Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310029, China.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is an antiepileptic drug that is frequently detected in wastewater treatment plants, soil and plants after irrigation with treated wastewater or application of biosolids. However, little information is available on the fate and uptake of CBZ in edible vegetables. In this study, radioautographic visualization of the C distribution revealed that C-CBZ can be taken up by all three ready-to-eat vegetables.

The present study was undertaken for the purpose of the comparative analysis of the degree of severity and inflammation-induced changes in palatine tonsils of the patients presenting with non-anginous forms of chronic tonsillitis both on the side of development of paratonsillitis and on the opposite side showing no visually visible signs of the acute inflammatory process. The secondary objective of the study was to compare pain syndrome during abscess-tonsillectomy and tonsillectomy proper, respectively. We analysed the causes behind the reduction of the total number of tonsillectomies for the treatment of chronic tonsillitis available from the accessible literature for the past 10 years.

The present review of the literature data demonstrates that the frequency of tonsillectomies has reduced during the last 10 years. The authors consider the possible causes accounting for this decrease. In addition, results of an epidemiological study are presented based on the analysis of medical records of the patients with chronic tonsillitis complicated by paratonsillar abscess who were admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of No 1 City Clinical Hospital between 2002 and 2010.
