Active phytoextraction of toluene shifts the microbiome and enhances degradation capacity in hybrid poplar.

Hybrid poplars are widely recognized for their effectiveness in remediating subsurface aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX). While BTEX compounds are frequently found in the transpiration streams of poplars at contaminated sites, the microbial dynamics within these trees, particularly in response to hydrocarbon exposure, remain underexplored. This study utilized high-throughput amplicon sequencing to investigate the trunk microbiome in hybrid poplars at a field-scale toluene phytoremediation site.

Deep learning models can predict uptake of emerging contaminants in plants with improved accuracy because they leverage advanced data-driven approaches to capture non-linear relationships that traditional models struggle to address. Traditional models suffer from low accuracy in predicting transpiration stream concentration factor (TSCF) and root concentration factor (RCF). This study applied deep neural networks (DNN), recurrent neural networks (RNN), and long short-term memory (LSTM) to enhance the accuracy of predictive models for TSCF and RCF.

Changes in vapour pressure deficit can lead to the depletion and replenishment of stem water pools to buffer water potential variations in the xylem. Yet, the precise velocity at which stem water pools track environmental cues remains poorly explored. Nine eucalyptus seedlings grown in a glasshouse experienced high-frequency environmental oscillations and their stem radial variations (ΔR) were monitored at a 30-s temporal resolution in upper and lower stem locations and on the bark and xylem.

Riparian trees are particularly vulnerable to drought because they are highly dependent on water availability for their survival. However, the response of riparian tree species to water stress varies depending on regional hydroclimatic conditions, making them unevenly vulnerable to changing drought patterns. Understanding this spatial variability in stress responses requires a comprehensive assessment of water stress across broader spatial and temporal scales.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) pollution pose significant risks to ecosystems and contribute to bioaccumulation in plants, yet uptake mechanisms and combined toxicity are poorly understood. We used fluorescent labeling and europium-doped PS NPs to reveal the absorption and translocation of NPs by dandelions and conducted a transcriptomic analysis under PS NPs and DBP exposure. The results indicated that NPs are transported horizontally through the intercellular gaps at the root tips and primary root-lateral root junctions via the apoplastic pathway, followed by longitudinal transport through the xylem vessels under the transpiration stream.
