We report here the discovery, isolation, and chemical and preliminary biological characterization of a new antibiotic compound, 7-O-malonyl macrolactin A (MMA), produced by a Bacillus subtilis soil isolate. MMA is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits a number of multidrug-resistant gram-positive bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and a small-colony variant of Burkholderia cepacia. MMA-treated staphylococci and enterococci were pseudomulticellular and exhibited multiple asymmetric initiation points of septum formation, indicating that MMA may inhibit a cell division function.

A comprehensive analytic strategy was performed to study the acaricidal activity ingredients of W1, a strain for biological control of . Through genome mining, 14 biosynthetic gene clusters were identified, which encode secondary metabolites, and these were further confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS or LC-ESI-MS/MS, including bacillomycin D C13-C17, macrolactin A, 7--malonyl-macrolactin A, surfactin C14, and surfactin C15. Moreover, 27 volatile compounds were identified by GC-MS, mainly including cyclodipeptides, alkanes, organic acids, and esters.

A new macrolactin derivate, 7-O-2'E-butenoyl macrolactin A (1), together with three known macrolactin compounds, macrolactin A (2), 7-O-malonyl macrolactin A (3) and 7-O-succinyl macrolactin A (4), was isolated from the bacterial strain Bacillus subtilis B5, which was isolated from the 3000 m deep sea sediment of the Southwest Pacific Ocean. The structures of the new compounds were assigned by spectroscopic methods including 1-D/2-D NMR and MS analysis techniques. Compounds 1 and 2 demonstrated antifungal activities against tea pathogenic fungi Pestalotiopsis theae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.

Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) is an important soil-borne pathogen worldwide. We investigated the effects of a new bioorganic fertilizer, BIO62, which was made from organic fertilizer and antagonist Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HR62, on the control of bacterial wilt of tomato in greenhouse condition. The results showed that the application of BIO62 significantly decreased disease incidence by 65% and strongly reduced R.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strains have been used as biocontrol agents for the suppression of several soilborne plant pathogens. A clearer understanding of the antagonistic mechanisms of action of these bacteria will facilitate their use in the control of plant diseases. Antagonistic substances were isolated from the fermentation broth of B.
