A series of donor-acceptor complexes containing sulfur trioxide have been studied in the gas and condensed phases using density functional theory. The condensed phase is represented using the polarizable continuum model. The systems investigated include complexes of nitrogen-containing donor molecules, (CH(3))(n)H(3-n)N (n = 0-3), with SO(3) and complexes of oxygen-containing donor molecules, (CH(3))(m)H(2-m)O (m = 0-2), with SO(3). Significant differences are observed between the gas- and condensed-phase properties of the complexes as a result of the ability of the condensed-phase medium to support higher charge separation between the donor and acceptor. The gas/condensed-phase behavior of two nitrogen-containing complexes, (CH(3))H(2)N-SO(3) and (CH(3))(2)HN-SO(3), has been investigated for the first time. These complexes exhibit properties intermediate to the previously observed H(3)N-SO(3) and (CH(3))(3)N-SO(3) complexes. Systematic trends in the gas- and condensed-phase structure and properties have been observed as methyl groups are added to the donor molecule. In addition, two oxygen-containing complexes, CH(3)OH-SO(3) and (CH(3))(2)O-SO(3), have been characterized for the first time. The differences between the gas- and condensed-phase properties of the oxygen-containing complexes are, in many cases, larger than those of the nitrogen-containing complexes, and therefore they represent an intriguing new class of complexes for potential experimental observation. Finally, a strong correlation between the charge transfer and binding energy has been obtained for both the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing complexes of sulfur trioxide.

Lipid A, a well-known saccharolipid, acts as the inner lipid-glycan anchor of lipopolysaccharides in Gram-negative bacterial cell membranes and functions as an endotoxin. Its structure is composed of two glucosamines with β(1 → 6) linkages and various fatty acyl and phosphate groups. The lipid A structure can be used for the identification of bacterial species, but its complexity poses significant structural characterization challenges.

Unraveling the Meaning of Effective Uptake Coefficients in Multiphase and Aerosol Chemistry.

ConspectusReactions of gas phase molecules with surfaces play key roles in atmospheric and environmental chemistry. Reactive uptake coefficients (γ), the fraction of gas-surface collisions that yield a reaction, are used to quantify the kinetics in these heterogeneous and multiphase systems. Unlike rate coefficients for homogeneous gas- or liquid-phase reactions, uptake coefficients are system- and observation-dependent quantities that depend upon a multitude of underlying elementary steps.

The durability and flame retardancy of cotton fabrics have been the focus of long-term research. In this paper, a method for preparing flame retardants through the direct modification of biomass was proposed, and the durable flame retardant of homologous cottonseed meal modified biomass flame retardants for cotton fabrics was achieved through biomass composition analysis and modeling. In this study, a cottonseed meal-phosphoric acid-boric acid synergistic bio-based flame retardant (CPB) was synthesized and characterized.

Small differences in the structure and subsequent reactivity of glyphosate complexes can have a highly consequential impact due to the enormous quantities of glyphosate used globally. The gas phase metal speciation of glyphosate and its abundant metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), were determined using cross-platform electrospray ionisation ion mobility mass spectrometry. Monomeric [M + L - H] complexes, and both larger, and/or higher order clusters formed with divalent metals (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn; and L = glyphosate and AMPA).

In this perspective we deal with the challenge of investigating nuclear quantum effects in solvated and condensed phase molecular systems in a computationally affordable way. To this end, semiclassical methods are promising theoretical approaches, as we demonstrate through vibrational spectroscopy and reaction kinetics. We show that quantum vibrational features can be found in hydrates of carbonyl compounds and microsolvated amino acids, and we report quantum estimates of the low-temperature reaction rate constant of a unimolecular reaction taking place in a noble-gas matrix.
