Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been frequently used as photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using sacrificial agents with UV-vis or visible light irradiation. The aim of the present review is to summarize the use of MOFs as solar-driven photocatalysts targeting to overcome the current efficiency limitations in overall water splitting (OWS). Initially, the fundamentals of the photocatalytic OWS under solar irradiation are presented.

With their outstanding diversities in both structures and performances, newly emerging metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are considered to be the most promising artificial catalysts to meet multiple challenges in the fields of energy and environment. Especially in absorption and conversion of solar energy, a variety of MOFs can be readily designed to cover and harvest the sun irradiation of ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared region through tuning both organic linkers and metal nodes to create optimal photocatalytic efficiency. Nowadays, a variety of MOFs were successfully synthesized as powerful photocatalysts for important redox reactions such as water-splitting, CO reduction and aqueous environmental pollutants detoxification.

Photocatalysis has been proposed as one of the most promising approaches for solar fuel production. Among the photocatalysts studied for water splitting, graphene and related materials have recently emerged as attractive candidates due to their striking properties and sustainable production when obtained from biomass wastes. In most of the cases reported so far, graphene has been typically used as additive to enhance its photocatalytic activity of semiconductor materials as consequence of the improved charge separation and visible light harvesting.

This review summarises the most recent advances in Ir-NHC catalysis while revisiting all the classical reactions in which this type of catalyst has proved to be active. The influence of the ligand system and, in particular, the impact of the NHC ligand on the activity and selectivity of the reaction have been analysed, accompanied by an examination of the great variety of catalytic cycles hitherto reported. The reaction mechanisms so far proposed are described and commented on for each individual process.
