Anabolic steroids in sport.

Published: December 1991

The use of androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) for enhancing athletic performance and body image is widespread. An increasing number of elite and recreational athletes of varying ages and athletic pursuits are using AAS. Sophisticated patterns of AAS use are supported by unethical and illegal distribution channels. Various testosterone-derived preparations attempt to manipulate pharmacological characteristics in an effort to maximize anabolic potential while minimizing androgenic effects. Although anecdotal and theoretical information suggests that AAS have positive ergogenic properties, the experimental evidence is equivocal. In addition to the ethical and legal implications of using AAS, there are diverse, though often reversible, medical and behaviour ramifications. In an effort to control and discourage AAS use, relevant sport governing bodies have implemented various testing and educational programs with undetermined success.

Objective: Accelerated ageing indexed by telomere attrition is suggested in schizophrenia spectrum- (SCZ) and bipolar disorders (BD). While inflammation may promote telomere shortening, few studies have investigated the association between telomere length (TL) and markers of immune activation and inflammation in severe mental disorders.

Methods: Leucocyte TL defined as telomere template/amount of single-copy gene template (T/S ratio), was determined in participants with SCZ ( = 301) or BD ( = 211) and a healthy control group (HC, = 378).

Background: The synchronized absorption of amino acids (AAs) and glucose in the gut is crucial for effective AA utilization and protein synthesis in the body. The study investigated how the starch digestion rate and AA levels impact intestinal AA digestion, transport and metabolism, breast muscle protein metabolism, and growth in grower broilers. A total of 720 21-day-old healthy male Arbor Acres Plus broilers were randomly assigned to 12 treatments, each with 6 replicates of 10 birds.

As one of the most harmful heavy metal pollutants, hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is becoming a serious threat to human health. Thus pursuing a remarkably sensitive method to monitor the Cr(VI) concentration in natural conditions is favored for the fast response to prevent harm. In the present work, an ethylenediamine (En) and SiO-modified wool keratin-based carbon quantum dot (CQD)(En@CQDs@SiO) fluorescent sensor is prepared, and the En is found to improve the discrimination ability by binding the Cr(VI) with the surface carboxyl groups.

Background And Objectives: Despite their limited benefits and serious adverse effects, psychotropics remain frequently prescribed for neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) of dementia. Psychotropic polypharmacy, the use of two or more concomitant psychotropic medications, is therefore not recommended for people with dementia. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of psychotropic polypharmacy in Australians living with dementia whose caregivers sought external NPS support from Dementia Support Australia (DSA; the national provider of NPS support) and the association of psychotropic polypharmacy with their demographics and NPS characteristics.

Single-Template Molecularly Imprinted Chiral Sensor for Enantioselective Recognition of Various Chiral Amino Acids Based on a Dummy Template Strategy.

Designing single-template molecularly imprinted chiral sensors for the enantioselective recognition of various chiral amino acids (AAs) is of great importance for chiral analysis. Here, a dummy template-based chiral sensor is developed by using l-alanine (l-Ala) as the dummy template and poly(-phenylenediamine) as the imprinting layer, which can be used for the enantioselective recognition of various chiral AAs such as Ala, tryptophan (Trp), tyrosine (Tyr), cysteine (Cys), and arginine (Arg). Compared with conventional single-template molecularly imprinted chiral sensors, the designed single-template chiral sensor shows great universality for the recognition of chiral AAs since all chiral AAs possess an Ala-analogous segment.
