This review will summarize the authors' recent studies of the relationship between ciliary blood flow and aqueous production, and discuss the relevance of that relationship to the mechanisms of action of glaucoma drugs that lower intraocular pressure by inhibiting aqueous production. The ciliary processes are not easily accessible, and so the data presented necessarily come from animals and from instrumentation operated at its engineering limits. Verification of the findings in humans, and perhaps refinement of the interpretations, must await future advances in technology. Nonetheless, the results to date are intriguing, and may help explain some paradoxes in glaucoma pharmacology.

To balance the stability and dissolution of polyacrylamide (PAM), emulsion drag reducers dominate the successful operation of volumetric fracturing. Herein, a pH-switchable four-tailed ionic liquid surfactant (OA/Cyclen) is synthesized by oleic acid (OA) and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (Cyclen). The four-tailed structure of OA/Cyclen enhances the stability of the emulsion polymerization reactor and supplies enough switchable sites for triggering the intensified release of the PAM emulsion.

Polysaccharides represent the most abundant biopolymers in agri-food wastes and thus are the most studied polymers to produce biodegradable films for use in packaging. Starch is among the major polysaccharides extracted from food and agricultural waste that have been used as precursor material for film production. Therefore, the present study aimed at producing an active film with antimicrobial properties using starch extracted from cassava waste and oil extracted from cloves.

During coffee production, the removal and disposal of the coffee bean-surrounding layers pose an environmental problem. In this work, we examined the effects of several aqueous coffee cherry extracts on the growth and metabolism, biofilm formation, antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity of six lactobacilli from the INIA collection and a commercial probiotic GG strain. Growth medium supplementation with different coffee cherry extracts (at 40%) stimulated strain growth and metabolism.

Rich in bioactive compounds, carbohydrates, fibers, minerals, and trace elements, apple pomace (AP) is a significant agro-industrial by-product, which pollutes and brings high management costs. The current study investigates the possibility of using an aqueous AP extract (APE) as the main ingredient in a jelly candy recipe, replacing artificial colors and flavors and improving its nutritional value. APE and formulated jelly candies were analyzed in terms of their phytochemical profile, antioxidant capacity, and color parameters.

In this study, the antioxidant and prooxidant potency of protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) was evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The potency of direct scavenging of hydroperoxyl (HOO) and lipid peroxyl radicals (modeled by vinyl peroxyl, HC=CHOO) involved in lipid peroxidation was estimated. The repair of oxidative damage in biomolecules (lipids, proteins and nucleic acids) and the prooxidant ability of PCA phenoxyl radicals were considered.
