Objective: To assess the usefulness of transverse cerebellar diameter (TCD) as an independent parameter for gestational age assessment in third trimester of pregnancy.

Design: An observational study.

Place And Duration Of Study: Diagnostic Radiology Department, PNS Shifa, Karachi between April 2002 to July 2004.

Patients And Methods: This study was performed on patients between 26-38 weeks of gestation with normal pregnancy. Grey scale antenatal ultrasonography was done with 3.5 MHz probe to measure fetal transverse cerebellar diameter and was correlated with gestational age in weeks. These cases were followed progressively at different periods of gestation throughout the pregnancy. Collected data was converted into variables which were analyzed by SPSS version 10, descriptive statistics included mean +/- standard deviation which were computed for TCD and other fetal biometry parameters.

Results: Transverse cerebellar diameter varied in a linear fashion in third trimester, while transverse cerebellar diameter/abdominal circumference (TCD/AC) ratio remained constant in second half of pregnancy. All the parameters were expressed by regression equations and correlation coefficients were found to be statistically significant (r=0.99 for TCD, r=0.98 for TCD/AC all p<0.0001).

Conclusion: This study signifies that transverse cerebellar diameter and TCD/AC ratio on serial sonography give an accurate idea of gestational age. Cases with intrauterine growth restriction can be diagnosed if local, nomogram can be prepared for different ethnic groups.

The cerebellum plays a crucial role in functions, including sensory-motor coordination, cognition, and emotional processing. Compared to the neocortex, the human cerebellum exhibits a protracted developmental trajectory. This delayed developmental timeline may lead to increased sensitivity of the cerebellum to external influences, potentially extending the vulnerability period for neurological disorders.

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is an important condition for plastic surgeons to understand, as it significantly affects patients' quality of life and can complicate aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become vital in diagnosing HFS, assessing neurovascular relationships, and planning treatment. Transverse MRI scans often show an upward displacement of the inferior pons at the facial nerve attachment point, signaling neurovascular compression (NVC) in HFS.

An 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with acute cerebellar infarction. Conventional magnetic resonance angiography and computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed occlusion of the right vertebral artery (VA). Carotid ultrasonography revealed that the right VA was narrowed at its entry point into the transverse foramen near C6.

Departments of Neurology, Korea University Ansan Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, Ansan, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Space-occupying cerebellar infarction can be catastrophic, leading to brainstem compression, transtentorial herniation, and obstructive hydrocephalus. Herein, we investigated the association between the venous outflow pattern based on transverse sinus (TS) shape and the outcome of space-occupying cerebellar infarction.

Methods: Patients with space-occupying cerebellar infarctions were enrolled, and data on baseline demographics, clinical factors, and venous outflow patterns, including the type of TS were collected.

This retrospective study assessed anatomical characteristics of cervicomedullary compression in children with achondroplasia. Twelve anatomical parameters were analyzed (foramen magnum diameter and area; myelon area; clivus length; tentorium and occipital angles; brainstem volume outside the posterior fossa; and posterior fossa, cerebellum, supratentorial ventricular system, intracranial cerebrospinal fluid, and fourth ventricle volumes) from sagittal and transversal T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from 37 children with achondroplasia aged ≤ 4 years (median [range] 0.8 [0.
