Analysis of micronuclei, nuclear buds, bi-polynucleated and fragmented-apoptotic cells was performed in gills of blue mussels exposed for 3 weeks to sublethal concentrations of bisphenol A, diallyl phthalate (for the both nominal concentration 50 ppb) and to tetrabromodiphenyl ether-47 (nominal concentration 5 ppb). Fourteen specimens from each treatment and control group were used for the analysis. Our results demonstrated a significant increase in micronuclei frequency after the treatment with bisphenol A (P=0.0243), diallyl phthalate (P=0.0005) and tetrabromodiphenyl ether-47 (P<0.0001; Mann-Whitney U-test). Induction of bi-nucleated (P=0.0028), fragmented-apoptotic (P=0.0004) cells and nuclear buds (P=0.0101) was found in mussels exposed to tetrabromodiphenyl ether-47 while treatment with diallyl phthalate increased the level of fragmented-apoptotic cells (P=0.0283). Bisphenol A was the only agent that resulted only in induction of micronuclei but not any other kind of nuclear injuries.

In this work, a novel electrospun nanofiber (PAN/TpBD; 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol [Tp] and benzidine [BD]; polyacrylonitrile [PAN]) was fabricated via a facile electrospinning method and utilized as adsorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) of phthalate esters (PAEs) (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and dioctyl phthalate) in biodegradable plastics. The prepared PAN/TpBD combines the strong stability of nanofibers with increased exposure sites for covalent organic frameworks and enhanced interactions with the target, thus improving the enrichment effect on the target. The extraction efficiency of PAN/TpBD reached above 80%.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are plasticizers widely used in the industry and easily released into the environment, posing a serious threat to human health. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are important as selective adsorbents for the removal of PAEs. In this study, three kinds of mussel-inspired MIPs for the removal of PAEs were first prepared with gallic acid (GA), hexanediamine (HD), tannic acid (TA), and dopamine (DA) under mild conditions.

In this work, the removal and transformation process of diethyl phthalate (DEP) in UV/dichloroisocyanurate (UV/DCCNa) and UV/sodium hypochlorite (UV/NaClO) systems were compared to evaluate the application potential of UV/DCCNa technology. Compared with UV/NaClO, UV/DCCNa process has the advantage of DEP removal and caused a higher degradation efficiency (93.8%) within 45 min of oxidation in ultrapure water due to the sustained release of hypochloric acid (HOCl).

In this work, an evaluation of the occurrence of fifteen phthalates, four metabolites and one adipate in different groundwater, seawater and wastewater samples has been carried out due to their relevance on human health as they act as endocrine disruptors. For this purpose, a sustainable, fast and easy-handling vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction method using a natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent based on menthol and carvacrol as extraction agent, combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique, has been developed and applied for the first time. An optimization was performed to evaluate four important factors affecting the extraction performance, and an analytical validation was carried out in terms of matrix effect, linearity, extraction efficiency, and sensitivity.
