Experiments have shown that the intrinsic excitability of neurons is not constant, but varies with physiological stimulation and during various learning paradigms. We study a model of Hebbian synaptic plasticity which is supplemented with intrinsic excitability changes. The excitability changes transcend time delays and provide a memory trace. Periods of selective enhanced excitability can thus assist in forming associations between temporally separated events, such as occur in trace conditioning. We demonstrate that simple bidirectional networks with excitability changes can learn trace conditioning paradigms.

A method to determine electron temperature within a plasma by the spectral analysis of atomic tungsten emission has been explored. The technique was applied to a post-discharge region immediately following a high voltage nanosecond pulsed discharge in air with tungsten electrodes. Atomic tungsten lines are readily observed in the weak emission spectrum within the post-discharge region for many microseconds.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exhibit intriguing characteristics that position them as promising candidates for advancements in organic semiconductor technologies. Notably, tetracene finds substantial utility in Electronics due to its application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The strategic introduction of an isoelectronic boron-nitrogen (B,N) pair to replace a carbon-carbon pair in acenes introduces changes in the electronic structure, allowing for the controlled modulation of diradical characteristics.

Single cell Ca imaging is essential for the study of Ca channels activated by various stimulations like temperature, voltage, native compound and chemicals et al. It primarily relies on microscopy imaging technology and the related Ca indicator Fura-2/AM (AM is the abbreviation for Acetoxymethyl ester). Inside the cells, Fura-2/AM is hydrolyzed by esterases into Fura-2, which can reversibly bind with free cytoplasmic Ca.

β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) play a critical role in modulating learning, memory, emotionality, and long-term synaptic plasticity. Recent studies indicate that β-ARs are necessary for long-term potentiation (LTP) induction in the ventral hippocampus under moderate synaptic activation conditions that do not typically induce LTP. To explore potential dorsoventral differences in β-AR-mediated effects, we applied the β-AR agonist isoproterenol (10 μM, 30 min) to dorsal and ventral hippocampal slices, recording field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) and population spikes (PSs) from the CA1 region.

Distortions in the porphyrin core from planarity can trigger a unique structure-property relationship, imparting its basicity, chemical stability, redox potential, and excited-state energetics, among other properties. The colour change promoted by such distortion is signed by red shifts in its electronic absorption spectra. The adsorption of guest -substituted free-base porphyrin species onto inorganic hosts, such as clay minerals (layered aluminium or magnesium silicates), is known to further promote colour changes.
