Electronic spectra of gas-phase V+(OCO) are measured in the near-infrared from 6050 to 7420 cm(-1) and in the visible from 15,500 to 16,560 cm(-1), using photofragment spectroscopy. The near-IR band is complex, with a 107 cm(-1) progression in the metal-ligand stretch. The visible band shows clearly resolved vibrational progressions in the metal-ligand stretch and rock, and in the OCO bend, as observed by Brucat and co-workers. A vibrational hot band gives the metal-ligand stretch frequency in the ground electronic state nu3'' = 210 cm(-1). The OCO antisymmetric stretch frequency in the ground electronic state (nu1'') is measured by using vibrationally mediated photodissociation. An IR laser vibrationally excites ions to nu1'' = 1. Vibrationally excited ions selectively dissociate following absorption of a second, visible photon at the nu1' = 1 <-- nu1'' = 1 transition. Rotational structure in the resulting vibrational action spectrum confirms that V+(OCO) is linear and gives nu1'' = 2392.0 cm(-1). The OCO antisymmetric stretch frequency in the excited electronic state is nu1' = 2368 cm(-1). Both show a blue shift from the value in free CO2, due to interaction with the metal. Larger blue shifts observed for complexes with fewer ligands agree with trends seen for larger V+(OCO)n clusters.

Herein, we report on the ultrafast photodissociation of nickel tetracarbonyl-a prototypical metal-ligand model system-at 197 nm. Using mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy to probe the bound C≡O stretching modes, we find evidence for the picosecond time scale production of highly vibronically excited nickel dicarbonyl and nickel monocarbonyl, in marked contrast with a prior investigation at 193 nm. Further spectral evolution with a 50 ps time constant suggests an additional dissociation step; the absence of any corresponding growth in signal strongly indicates the production of bare Ni, a heretofore unreported product from single-photon excitation of nickel tetracarbonyl.

Dynamic metal-coordinated adhesive and self-healable hydrogel materials have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in various fields. These hydrogels can form reversible metal-ligand bonds, resulting in a network structure that can be easily broken and reformed, leading to self-healing capabilities. In addition, these hydrogels possess excellent mechanical strength and flexibility, making them suitable for strain-sensing applications.

Elucidating the relationship between metal-ligand interactions and the associated conformational change of the ligand is critical for understanding the separation of lanthanides ion binding. Here we examine DTPA, a multidentate ligand that binds lanthanides, in its free and metal bound conformations using ultrafast polarization dependent vibrational spectroscopy. The polarization dependent pump-probe spectra were analyzed to extract the isotropic and anisotropic response of DTPA's carbonyl groups in the 1550-1650 cm spectral region.

Photoexcitation of [Fe(2,2'-bipyridine)] induces a subpicosecond spin crossover transformation from a low-spin singlet to a high-spin quintet state. The mechanism involves metal-centered (MC) and metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) triplet intermediates, but their individual contributions to this efficient intersystem crossing have been object of debate. Employing quantum wavepacket dynamics, we show that MC triplets are catalyzing the transfer to the high-spin state.

Control of the metal ligand interaction by changes in the ligand protonation state is vital to many catalytic transformations based on metal-ligand cooperativity. Herein, we report on the coordination chemistry of a new PC(H)N pincer ligand with a central ylide as donor site, which through deprotonation to the corresponding yldiide changes from a neutral L-type ligand to an anionic LX-type PCN ligand. The isolation of a series of rhodium complexes showed that the strong donor ability of the neutral ylide PC(H)N is further increased upon deprotonation, as evidenced by one of the lowest reported CO stretching frequencies in complex [(PCN)Rh(CO)] (2) compared to other known rhodium carbonyl complexes.
