The paper presents the contribution of the cocrystallization method in the physicochemical modification of catechins that exhibit low oral bioavailability. This was done to obtain cocrystals for two naturally occurring polyphenolic diastereoisomers (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin with commonly used coformers. Due to distinct crystallization behavior, only the (-)-epicatechin cocrystal with barbituric acid in a 1:1 stoichiometry was obtained.

A cocrystal, C15H22O3·C15H22O3, (I), obtained from Drimys winteri, is composed of two isomeric drimane sesquiterpene lactones, namely valdiviolide, (Ia), and 11-epivaldiviolide, (Ib), neither of which has been reported in the crystal form. Both diastereoisomers present three chiral centres at sites 5, 10 and 11, with an SSR sequence in (Ia) and an SSS sequence in (Ib). O-H···O hydrogen bonds bind molecules into chains running along [120] and the chains are in turn linked by π-π stacking interactions to define planar weakly interacting arrays parallel to (001).

Parallel studies of the preparation of Re and (99m)Tc agents aid in interpreting the nature of tracer (99m)Tc radiopharmaceuticals. Aqueous solutions of the fac-[(99m)Tc(CO)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](+) cation are gaining wide use and are readily prepared, but such solutions of the fac-[Re(CO)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](+) cation (1) are not so easily accessible. Herein we describe a new, reliable, and straightforward preparation of aqueous solutions of 1, characterized by HPLC and ESI-MS.
