The spectroscopic properties and photochemical behavior of molecules having 2-ethynylbiphenyl or 2-phenyldiphenylacetylene structures are reported. These molecules undergo photocyclization reactions to yield phenanthrene and dihydrophenanthrene products via putative isophenanthrene (cyclic allene) intermediates. Phenanthrene formation from the isophenanthrene intermediates does not occur via a unimolecular sigmatropic hydrogen shift, but rather by protonation or hydrogen abstraction mechanisms involving the solvent. Cyclization efficiencies are much lower than is the case for previously-investigated 2-vinylbiphenyl systems. The 2-phenyldiphenylacetylenes have high fluorescence quantum yields and long singlet lifetimes when compared to diphenylacetylene. The 2-ethynylbiphenyls decay via a combination of fluorescence and intersystem crossing.

Solvent-Responsive Glass Transition Behavior of Polyelectrolyte Complexes.

Macromolecules

Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843, United States.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique physicochemical properties and potential applications as smart materials. Herein, the glass transitions of PECs solvated with varying alcohols are investigated in poly(diallyldimethylammonium)/poly(acrylic acid) (PDADMA/PAA) complexes by using modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC). Solvents with one or two hydroxyl groups are selected to examine the effect of PAA-solvent interactions on the glass transition temperature ( ).

Self-Diffusion of Star and Linear Polyelectrolytes in Salt-Free and Salt Solutions.

Macromolecules

January 2025

Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77840, United States.

This work explored solution properties of linear and star poly(methacrylic acids) with four, six, and eight arms (PMAA, 4PMAA, PMAA, and 8PMAA, respectively) of matched molecular weights in a wide range of pH, salt, and polymer concentrations. Experimental measurements of self-diffusion were performed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and the results were interpreted using the scaling theory of polyelectrolyte solutions. While all PMAAs were pH sensitive and showed an increase in hydrodynamic radius ( ) with pH in the dilute regime, the of star polymers (measured at basic pH values) was significantly smaller for the star polyacids due to their more compact structure.

The legalization of cannabis in several states across the US has increased the need to better understand its effects on the body, brain, and behavior, particularly in different populations. Rodent models are particularly valuable in this respect because they provide precise control over external variables. Previous rodent studies have found age and sex differences in response to injected Δ -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component of cannabis.

Rescaled Free-Volume Theory of Diffusivity of Polystyrene in Various Organic Solvents.

It remains, as yet, far from satisfactory to account for the explicit role of the solvent effect on the transport behaviors of various polymer solutions, especially depending upon the polymer concentration. Here, we exploit the statistical mechanical free-volume theory to describe the diffusivity of polymer solutions in an analytical form in terms of the solvent-solvent, particle-particle, and solvent-particle pair correlation functions as a function of the polymer concentration. To be specific, we introduce a particle size scaling parameter as a measure of the effective polymer-solvent interaction that leads to different polymer globular states, depending on the embedding solvents.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 plays a major role in drug metabolism. Its activity could be determined by non-invasive and cost-effective assays, such as breath analysis, for the personalised monitoring of drug response. For the first time, we identify an isotopically unlabelled CYP3A4 substrate, tolterodine that leads to the formation of a non-toxic volatile metabolite, acetone, which could potentially be applied to monitor CYP3A4 activity in humans.
