Aims: To assess the impact of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) on patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL).

Methods: Two HRQOL instruments were administered by telephone interviews to a sample of 253 IBS French patients recruited from the general population. IBS was diagnosed according to the Manning, Rome I and Rome II criteria. Patients with organic diseases were excluded from the study. A generic instrument, the Short Form 36 (SF-36), and an IBS disease-specific instrument, the IBSQOL, were used.

Results: Patients with IBS had statistically significant (P<0.05) lower scores for all SF-36 QOL domains compared with the general French population. Women (N=192) reported significantly (P<0.05) poorer HRQOL on both the SF-36 and the IBSQOL scores than men (N=61) for all domains except energy on the SF36 and the sleep on the IBSQOL. HRQOL deteriorated with time since onset of IBS symptoms for some domains such as diet. For both instruments, a positive correlation was observed between low scores and intensity of pain and discomfort. IBS patients with a predominance of diarrhea (N=72) exhibited significantly greater impairment of HRQOL in the emotional domain than IBS persons with constipation predominance (N=65) (P
Conclusion: IBS has a significant impact on HRQOL of patients. In addition, specific characteristics such as gender, symptom severity and time since onset of symptoms are predictive of more impaired health-related quality of life.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been effectively treated with acupuncture, but the significance of quality of life, depression, and anxiety in the assessment of IBS patients has received little consideration. This study examined the impact of acupuncture on depression, anxiety, and quality of life in IBS patients.

Method: PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), EMBASE, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), Chinese Biological Medical (CBM, SinoMed) Database, and the Wan Fang Database were among the electronic databases from which relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were systematically retrieved between their inception and July 2023.

Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), is increasingly recognized as a condition affecting not only adults but also children and adolescents. While children often experience milder acute COVID-19 symptoms compared to adults, some develop persistent physical, psychological, and neurological symptoms lasting for weeks or months after initial infection. The most commonly reported symptoms include debilitating fatigue, respiratory issues, headaches, muscle pain, gastrointestinal disturbances, and cognitive difficulties, which significantly impact daily activities, schooling, and social interactions.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, affecting 3-5% of the global population and significantly impacting patients' quality of life and healthcare resources. Alongside physical symptoms such as abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, many individuals experience psychological comorbidities, including anxiety and depression. Recent research has highlighted the critical role of the gut microbiota in IBS, with dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in microbial diversity, frequently observed in patients.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy marked by drug-resistant seizures and profound cognitive and behavioral impairments, with nearly 95% of individuals affected by moderate to severe intellectual disability. This review comprehensively explores the cognitive and behavioral impacts of current treatment options for LGS, including antiseizure medications (ASMs), neuromodulation strategies, the ketogenic diet, and surgical interventions. Given the limited availability of LGS-specific data for several ASMs, the evidence base is supplemented with findings from general epilepsy populations and individuals with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities.
