In vitro-packaged cosmid libraries of DNA from the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum were restricted 200- to 1,000-fold when introduced into Mcr+ strains of Escherichia coli compared with restriction in the Mcr- strain HB101. Restriction was predominantly associated with the mcrBC+ gene in E. coli. A plasmid (pUFR052) encoding the XmaI and XmaIII DNA methylases was isolated from an X. campestris pv. malvacearum library by a screening procedure utilizing Mcr+ and Mcr- E. coli strains. Transfer of plasmids from E. coli strains to X. campestris pv. malvacearum by conjugation was enhanced by up to five orders of magnitude when the donor cells contained pUFR052 as well as the plasmid to be transferred. Subcloning of pUFR052 revealed that at least two regions of the plasmid were required for full modification activity. Use of such modifier plasmids is a simple, novel method that may allow the efficient introduction of genes into any organism in which restriction systems provide a potent barrier to such gene transfer.

Bacterial blight resistance gene has received little attention since it was first described in 1950. A near-isogenic line (NIL) of cotton, Ac, was generated in an otherwise bacterial-blight-susceptible 'Acala 44' background. The introgressed locus in Ac conferred strong and broad-spectrum resistance to bacterial blight.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesised using the crude ethyl acetate extracts of and evaluated their bioefficacy against two crop-damaging pathogens. The sets of lattice planes in the XRD spectrum for the Ag NPs were indexed to the 111, 200, 220 and 311 orientations and support the crystalline nature of the Ag NPs. The 3414 and 2968 cm peaks were observed in crude algal thallus extract and they were characteristic of terpenoids.

Harpins, encoded by hrp (hypersensitive response and pathogenicity) genes of Gram-negative plant pathogens, are elicitors of hypersensitive response (HR). HpaXm is a novel harpin-like protein described from cotton leaf blight bacteria, Xanthomonas citri subsp. malvacearum-a synonym of X.

Two proline containing cyclic dipeptides (CDPs), cyclo (L-Pro-L-Tyr) () and cyclo (L-Pro-L-Phe) () were isolated from the fermentation broth of VUK-10 originating from the Nizampatnam mangrove ecosystem on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh, India. The structures of the compounds were established by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, FTIR and EIMS. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of the compounds were tested against a variety of medicinally and agriculturally important bacteria and fungi as well as on the MDA-MB-231, OAW-42, HeLa and MCF-7 human cell lines.

A. Brinkerhoff's exceptional line Im216.
