New 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives (1 and 2) were synthesized as an "off-on" fluorescent chemosensor and fluorescent chemodosimeter for Cu2+ and Pb2+. Compound 1 displayed selective and large chelation enhanced fluorescence effects with Pb2+ and Cu2+ among the metal ions examined. On the other hand, compound 2, a fluorescent chemodosimeter, effectively recognized Cu2+ via a selective hydrolysis of the acetyl group.

The detection of both Br and its derivative of tetrabutylammonium tribromide (TBATB) is a very important issue concerning their biological toxicity but remains challenging. Fluorescent sensing is one of the few methods possessing both selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, it could be able to be utilized in biological system, but rarely reported.

Reaction-based fluorogenic sensing of lethal cyanide anions in aqueous matrices remains a big challenge. We have revisited the reported approach about an intramolecular crossed-benzoin reaction leading to the release of a phenol-based fluorophore. Fluorescence assays and RP-HPLC-MS analyses have helped us to highlight its limitations related to poor aqueous stability of probes and impossibility to achieve molecular amplification despite the assumed catalytic activation mechanism.

A new chemodosimeter SWJT-31 with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect was designed and constructed. Upon increasing the water fraction in the solution, it exhibited typical AIE, which showed bright red fluorescence at 610 nm. SWJT-31 could sensitively and specifically recognize hydrazine by the TICT effect with an LOD of 33.
