A 16-year-old girl with no previous cardiac problems presented to the casualty with septic shock. Investigations revealed endocarditis involving the mitral valve. At the time of surgery, she was noted to have a large left atrial appendage herniating into the left pleural cavity due to partial absence of the pericardium. Complete or partial absence of the pericardium is an uncommon congenital anomaly. Though various complications and presentations are reported, it has not been identified as a risk factor for endocarditis. We discuss the possible mechanism, and need for prophylaxis against endocarditis, in patients with absence of the pericardium.

The infrequency of PCL, coupled with its non-specific clinical presentations, often complicates early diagnosis. This study aims to fill the existing gap in clinical knowledge regarding PCL by detailing a case of PCL and examining its clinical features, auxiliary examinations, treatment approaches, and prognostic outcomes, thereby facilitating early detection and enhancing patient care.

Adipose tissue is considered to be an endocrine organ that not only plays a role in lipid storage, heat production, and buffering, but also produces physiologically active substances and is involved in chronic inflammation. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounding blood vessels similarly produces inflammatory and anti-inflammatory physiologically active substances that act on blood vessels either directly or via the bloodstream.

Primary pericardial mesothelioma is a highly aggressive and rare neoplasm that arises from the pericardial mesothelial cell and has a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is usually established by histological and immunohistochemical studies.
