AI Article Synopsis

  • The outbreak involved a strain of Enterobacter cloacae that showed resistance to multiple antibiotics.
  • It was specifically linked to mattresses and treated mattress covers used in therapeutic beds within an intensive care unit.
  • This situation raises concerns about infection control and the effectiveness of antibacterial treatments in healthcare settings.

Article Abstract

We report a multiresistant Enterobacter cloacae outbreak in an intensive care unit, associated with mattresses and with antibacterial-treated and vapour-permeable polyurethane synthetic mattress covers of therapeutic beds.

Background: The presence of microorganisms in laryngoscopes emphasizes the risk to patient safety during orotracheal intubations.

Methods: Cross-sectional study was carried out in university hospital in the inpatient, emergency, intensive care and surgical center sectors. Microorganisms were recovered from the blades using a filter membrane and from the handles using swab.

Surfactants can be used as nanoparticle stabilizing agents. However, since synthetic surfactants are not economically viable and environmentally friendly, biosurfactants are emerging as a green alternative for the synthesis and stabilization of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles have been applied in several areas of industry, such as the production of biomedical and therapeutic components, packaging coating, solar energy generation and transmission and distribution of electrical energy, among others.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on identifying and characterizing colistin-resistant bacteria from livestock in Algeria, specifically sheep, goats, and dromedaries.
  • Researchers screened 197 swabs and found 21 colistin-resistant strains, mainly from Escherichia coli, some of which carried the dangerous mcr-1 gene associated with antibiotic resistance.
  • The findings indicate a concerning presence of resistant bacteria in farm animals, posing a significant risk for spreading severe infections to humans.

Article Synopsis
  • Enterobacter cloacae complex is a significant multidrug-resistant pathogen found in hospitals, prompting a study on its antimicrobial resistance and genetic factors in Brazil.
  • The study screened 94 clinical isolates, finding 20.2% (19 isolates) resistant to colistin, with high levels of resistance indicated by MIC values ranging from 4 to 128 µg/mL.
  • Genetic analysis revealed several carbapenemase and polymyxin resistance genes, along with diverse genetic profiles among the isolates, but no predominant clone was established.

Enterobacter cloacae is a clinically significant pathogen due to its multi-resistance to antibiotics, presenting a challenge in the treatment of infections. As concerns over antibiotic resistance escalate, novel therapeutic approaches have been explored. Bacteriophages, characterized by their remarkable specificity and ability to self-replicate within target bacteria, are emerging as a promising alternative therapy.
