Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, transpupillary imaging technology that allows detailed analysis of the retinal structures. In a recent article, Gualino et al. reported that OCT revealed a foveolar cystoid space with focal disruption of the photoreceptors line that explains the irreversible loss of central vision in tamoxifen retinopathy. In addition to providing a better understanding of the pathogenesis of tamoxifen retinopathy, OCT screening is advisable in patients treated with tamoxifen over long periods in order to detect and prevent drug-induced retinal damage.

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss, significantly impacting quality of life. To enhance clinical practice and reduce the risk of drug-related macular degeneration, we analyzed drug-related trends using real-world data. Disproportionality analysis of adverse event reports from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS, 2004-2023) identified 67,683 cases involving 1402 drugs.

Background/objectives: Tamoxifen has well-known retinal toxicity, but the epidemiology of this toxicity is poorly defined. This study aims to 1) evaluate the prevalence of tamoxifen retinopathy in a major northeastern metropolitan area based on multimodal retinal imaging and 2) determine whether the additional peripheral retina captured in ultra-widefield (UWF) imaging aids in the diagnosis of tamoxifen retinopathy.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined female patients initiated on tamoxifen for at least 12 months prior to their first retinal exam.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the elderly. This disease involves oxidative stress burden in the retina leading to death of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and photoreceptors. The retina is susceptible to oxidative stress, in part due to high metabolic activity and high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids that undergo lipid peroxidation chain reactions.
