Angle-resolved light scattering has been used for decades to quantify the surface roughness of optical components. However, because this technique is affected by the contribution of both interfaces of the sample, it cannot be applied to transparent substrates. We show how to overcome this issue and apply these principles to the characterization of superpolished samples.

Optimization of In-Situ Growth of Superconducting Al/InAs Hybrid Systems on GaAs for the Development of Quantum Electronic Circuits.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

CNR-IOM-Istituto Officina dei Materiali, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, 34149 Trieste, Italy.

Hybrid systems consisting of highly transparent channels of low-dimensional semiconductors between superconducting elements allow the formation of quantum electronic circuits. Therefore, they are among the novel material platforms that could pave the way for scalable quantum computation. To this aim, InAs two-dimensional electron gases are among the ideal semiconductor systems due to their vanishing Schottky barrier; however, their exploitation is limited by the unavailability of commercial lattice-matched substrates.

This paper reviews and compares electrostatically actuated MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) arrays for light modulation and light steering in which transmission through the substrate is required. A comprehensive comparison of the technical achievements of micromirror arrays and microshutter arrays is provided. The main focus of this paper is MEMS micromirror arrays for smart glass in building windows and façades.

Based on additive manufacturing via photopolymerization, this study combines polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology with 3D printing technology to produce tunable micro-optical components with switchable diffraction or focusing characteristics. The diffraction grating and Fresnel zone plate are the research targets. Their structures are designed and simulated to achieve expected optical functions.

Highly Transparent Superhydrophobic Coatings for Prevention of Raindrop Adhesion on Rearview Mirrors.

Langmuir

January 2025

Center of Eco-Material and Green Chemistry, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, PR China.

The adhesion of raindrops on car rearview mirrors poses a significant threat to traffic safety due to the resulting blurred vision. Transparent superhydrophobic coatings have emerged as a potential solution to this problem. However, the development of transparent superhydrophobic coatings is often hampered by complex preparation procedures, high costs, and limited substrate compatibility, rendering them unsuitable for practical applications.

Advancements in printing techniques are essential for fabricating next-generation displays. Lead halide perovskites demonstrate great potential as light emitters of solution-processed light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In particular, the perovskite/polymer composite emitters exhibit exceptional luminescent characteristics, mechanical flexibility, and environmental stability due to the improved film morphologies and defect passivation achieved through the introduction of polymer additives.
