Strain GM-14 was isolated by selective enrichment from contaminated soil with chlorobenzene as the sole source of carbon and energy. It utilizes an exceptionally wide spectrum of haloaromatic substrates. It is a gram-positive, weakly acid-fast actinomycete, with a morphological cycle from cocci and short rods to long rods and branched filaments; it grew optimally at 28(deg)C; and it tolerated 5% NaCl in rich medium. The chemotaxonomic characteristics, the diagnostic biochemical tests, the whole-cell fatty acid composition, and 16S rDNA analysis were consistent with Rhodococcus opacus. R. opacus GM-14 grew on 48 of 117 different aromatic and haloaromatic compounds. It utilized phenol at concentrations up to 1.2 g/liter, 3- and 4-methylphenols up to 0.5 g/liter, 2- and 4-chlorophenols up to 0.25 g/liter, and 3-chlorophenol up to 0.1 g/liter. It grew in saturated aqueous solutions of benzene, chlorobenzene, and 1,3- and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (up to 13, 3, 0.5, and 0.5 g/liter, respectively). The specific growth rate of strain GM-14 on phenol and 3- and 4-chlorophenols in batch culture was 0.27 to 0.29 h(sup-1), and that on benzene and chlorobenzene was similar to the rate on fructose, i.e., 0.2 h(sup-1). The growth yield on benzene and on chlorobenzene (<=0.4 g liter(sup-1)) was 40 to 50 g (dry weight) per mol of substrate consumed, equalling 8 g of dry weight biomass per mol of substrate carbon, similar to that obtained on acetate. During growth of strain GM-14 on chlorobenzene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, and all isomers of monochlorophenol, stoichiometric amounts of chloride were released, and 50% of the stoichiometric amount was released from 1,4-dichlorobenzene.

Macrocyclic polymer materials exhibit excellent selectivity and adsorption performance in pollutant adsorption due to unique host-guest recognition. Herein, three kinds of calixarene polymers (C4P, C6P and C8P) were synthesized through Sonogashira reaction, and were characterized through H NMR, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. The water contact angle experiments revealed that three kinds of calixarene polymers were highly hydrophobic, and they all exhibited high enrichment efficiency for weak polar chloro-substituted benzene compounds (chlorobenzene, o-chlorotoluene, p-dichlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes).

An in situ reactive zone approach using calcium peroxide for the remediation of benzene and chlorobenzene in groundwater: A field study.

State Key Laboratory of Soil and Sustainable Agriculture, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 211135, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100049, China. Electronic address:

There is a gap in understanding the different contributions of biodegradation and free radical oxidation using calcium peroxide (CaO) for the remediation of mixed contaminants of benzene and chlorobenzene in groundwater. In this study, the remedial efficiency and mechanisms of benzene and chlorobenzene co-contaminants using CaO were explored by an integrated approach of field study and laboratory validation. It was found that in the field demonstration program, the radius of influence for each injection point using Geoprobe direct-push was larger than the designed value of 0.

Environmental exposures to volatile organic compound (VOC) mixtures have received increasing attention, yet the risks are under studied. This study aimed to explore the risks of combined exposures to several commonly detected VOCs and to draw attention to the necessity of studying long-term and low-concentration environmental exposure patterns. In this study, we examined the effects of long-term and low-concentration exposures to VOCs like 1,2-dichlorobenzene, benzene, toluene and formaldehyde either alone or in combination on D.

The groundwater at the Sardas landfill in Huesca, Spain, is contaminated with benzene, chlorobenzenes, and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers due to illegal waste dumping from a former lindane factory. In this study, microcosms using field-derived groundwater to evaluate in situ bioremediation were constructed. Anaerobic biostimulation with lactate successfully transformed α-, β-, δ-, and γ-HCH within two weeks, but failed to degrade benzene and less chlorinated benzenes, even with nutrient addition.

The impact of additives on the nanoscale structures of spin-cast polymer composite films, particularly in polymer solar cells, is a topic of significant interest. This study focuses on the blend film comprising poly(thieno[3,4-]thio-phene--benzodi-thio-phene) (PTB7) and [6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), exploring how additives like 1,8-di-iodo-octane (DIO) influence the film structures spin-cast from chloro-benzene solution. Combined results of specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity, grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that DIO could significantly enhance the dispersion of PCBM and reduce composition inhomogeneity in the film.
