We examined the sensitivity and the specificity of three versions of the Salkowski colorimetric technique. Two of these allowed the detection of indoleacetic acid (IAA) over a low range of concentrations (0.5 to 20 (mu)g/ml), while the third permitted the detection of IAA over a range of higher concentrations (5 to 200 (mu)g/ml). Overall, the three formulations reacted not only with auxin (IAA) but also with indolepyruvic acid and indoleacetamide. Therefore, these techniques appear to be specific for IAA, indolepyruvic acid, and indoleacetamide rather than for IAA alone.

Intracellular Polysaccharides of Exhibited Anticolitis Effects in Association with Gut Tryptophan Metabolism.

J Agric Food Chem

July 2024

Shaanxi Engineering Laboratory for Food Green Processing and Safety Control, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an 710119, China.

This study is to investigate the protective effects of intracellular polysaccharides (ECIP) on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC). The oral administration of ECIP could downregulate the disease activity index (DAI) and ameliorate the colonic shortening, immune stress, and damage caused by DSS. In addition, ECIP treatment increased the colonic contents of SCFAs including acetic, propionic, and butyric acids in UC mice.

Phenylpyruvate decarboxylase (PPDC) is a crucial enzyme that plays important roles in 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) biosynthesis. In our previous study, we screened a highly efficient PPDC KDC4427 from the novel 2-PE-producing strain Enterobacter sp. CGMCC 5087.

"The quantitative determination of indolic microbial tryptophan metabolites in human and rodent samples: A systematic review".

J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci

December 2021

Yale Child Study Center and the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, 230 S. Frontage Rd., New Haven, CT 06519, USA. Electronic address:

Concentrations reported for indolic microbial metabolites of tryptophan in human and rodent brain, cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, saliva and feces were compiled and discussed. A systematic review of the literature was accomplished by key word searches of Pubmed, Google Scholar and the Human Metabolome Data Base (HMDB), and by searching bibliographies of identified publications including prior reviews. The review was prompted by the increasing appreciation of the physiological importance of the indolic compounds in human health and disease.

Intestinal microbial dysbiosis, intestinal inflammation, and Th17 immunity are all linked to the pathophysiology of spondyloarthritis (SpA); however, the mechanisms linking them remain unknown. One potential hypothesis suggests that the dysbiotic gut microbiome as a whole produces metabolites that influence human immune cells. To identify potential disease-relevant, microbiome-produced metabolites, we performed metabolomics screening and shotgun metagenomics on paired colon biopsies and fecal samples, respectively, from subjects with axial SpA (axSpA, N=21), Crohn's disease (CD, N=27), and Crohn's-axSpA overlap (CD-axSpA, N=12), as well as controls (HC, N=24).

Rice is one of the most economically important commodities globally. However, rice plants are salt susceptible species in which high salinity can significantly constrain its productivity. Several physiological parameters in adaptation to salt stress have been observed, though changes in metabolic aspects remain to be elucidated.
