Can we prevent road rage?

Trauma Violence Abuse

Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Published: April 2006

Road rage has become a serious concern in many countries, and preventive efforts are required. This article reviews what can be done to prevent road rage by exploring potential prevention avenues in five areas. First, legal changes aimed at increasing the penalties for road rage behavior could be instituted, drawing on models from aggressive-driving or impaired-driving laws. A second approach would involve the adoption of court programs for convicted road ragers. Third, car redesign offers a means of reducing crime through environmental design. Fourth, mass media education could be implemented to inform drivers of the risk from road rage and how to avoid situations that facilitate road rage. Finally, prevention efforts could be directed to long-term societal changes that emphasize structural modifications, such as reducing congestion on the roads, reduced driver stress, or promoting public transportation. The strengths and weaknesses of these strategies are discussed.

Pathological role of RAGE underlying progression of various diseases: its potential as biomarker and therapeutic target.

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a multi-ligand receptor with several structural types, performing a myriad of molecular mechanisms. The RAGE-ligand interactions play important roles in maintaining latent chronic inflammation, and oxidative damage underlying various pathological conditions like metabolic syndrome (MetS), neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, cardiovascular disorders, pulmonary disorders, cancer and infections. RAGE is thoroughly explored in knockout animals and human trials, targeted by small molecule inhibitors, peptides, diet, and natural compounds.

Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, No. 155 Hanzhong Road, Nanjing 210029, China. Electronic address:

Qikui granule (QKG), a hospital preparation of traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used for diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in clinical practice. However, its holistic therapeutic effects and the underlying therapeutic mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, the integrated analysis of network pharmacology, 16S rRNA sequencing, and non-targeted lipidomics was performed to explore the anti-DKD effects of QKG and the underlying mechanisms in db/db mouse DKD model.

Background: Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), an indole analog produced by intestinal microorganisms metabolizing tryptophan, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and thus has potential applications in ovarian protection, although the exact mechanism is unknown. The present study preliminarily investigated the pharmacological mechanism of IAA in alleviating diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) by network pharmacology and molecular docking.

Methods: Relevant target proteins of IAA were searched in SwissTargetPrediction, PharmMapper, TargetNet, BATMAN-TCM, and SuperPred databases.

AGEs impair osteogenesis in orthodontic force-induced periodontal ligament stem cells through the KDM6B/Wnt self-reinforcing loop.

Background: Diabetes, occasionally diagnosed in orthodontic patients, can impede orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) by accumulating advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the periodontium. This accumulation impairs the osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) due to alterations in the force-loaded microenvironment, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive.

Methods: Bioinformatics analysis of GSE112122 identified alterations in the mechanical regulation of histone methylation enzyme Lysine Demethylase 6B (KDM6B).

PHB2 alleviates retinal pigment epithelium cell fibrosis by suppressing the AGE-RAGE pathway.

Open Life Sci

November 2024

Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510623, China.

Fibrosis is the primary cause of retinal detachment and visual decline. Here, we investigated the role of Prohibitin 2 (PHB2) in modulating fibrosis in ARPE-19 cells stimulated by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β2. The proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of ARPE-19 cells were evaluated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, wound healing, and flow cytometry assays, and levels of fibrosis-associated and pathway-related proteins were determined by performing western blotting.
