Using the multidentate ligand bis(N-methylimidazol-2-yl)-3-methylthiopropanol (L), the mononuclear iron(II) hydroxo and iron(III) dihydroxo complexes [Fe(II)(L)2(OH)](BF4) (1) and [Fe(III)(L)2(OH)2](BF4) (2) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. The X-ray data suggest that the remarkable stability of the Fe-OH bond(s) in both compounds results from intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between the hydroxo ligand(s) and the tertiary hydroxyl of the L ligands, which prevent further intermolecular reactions.

Despite the importance of structural control on metal stable isotope fractionation in inorganic and abiotic systems, the link between metal structural changes and related isotopic fractionation during reactions with organic surfaces and live cells remains poorly established. We conducted reversible adsorption of Fe(II) and Fe(III) on the surface of exopolysaccharide (EPS)-rich and EPS-poor , and we allowed Fe intracellular uptake by growing cells. We analyzed the Fe isotopic composition of the remaining fluid and cell biomass, and compared the isotopic fractionation during adsorption and assimilation reaction with relative changes in Fe structural status between aqueous solution and bacterial cells, based on available and newly collected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) observations.

Aerobic organisms involve dioxygen-activating iron enzymes to perform various metabolically relevant chemical transformations. Among these enzymes, mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes reductively activate dioxygen to catalyze diverse biological oxidations, including oxygenation of C-H and C═C bonds and C-C bond cleavage with amazing selectivity. Several non-heme enzymes utilize organic cofactors as electron sources for dioxygen reduction, leading to the generation of iron-oxygen intermediates that act as active oxidants in the catalytic cycle.

Oligo-α-pyridylamides offer an appealing route to polyiron complexes with short Fe-Fe separations and large room-temperature magnetic moments. A derivative of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (Htren) containing three oligo-α-pyridylamine branches and 13 nitrogen donors (HL) reacts with [Fe(Mes)] to yield an organic nanocage built up by two tripodal ligands with interdigitated branches (HMes = mesitylene). The nanocage has crystallographic symmetry but hosts a remarkably unsymmetric hexairon-oxo core, with a central Fe(μ-O) square pyramid, two oxygen donors bridging basal sites, and an additional Fe center residing in one of the two tren-like pockets.

The reduction of nitrite (NO) to generate nitric oxide (NO) is a significant area of research due to their roles in the global nitrogen cycle. Here, we describe various modifications of the tris(5-cyclohexyliminopyrrol-2-ylmethyl)amine H[N(pi)] ligand where the steric bulk and acidity of the secondary coordination sphere were explored in the non-heme iron system for nitrite reduction. The cyclohexyl and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl variants of the ligand were used to probe the mechanism of nitrite reduction.

Iron complexes that model the structural functional properties of the active iron site in rabbit lipoxygenase are described. The ligand sphere of the mononuclear pseudo-octahedral -(carboxylato)(hydroxo)iron(III) complex, which is completed by a tetraazamacrocyclic ligand, reproduces the first coordination shell of the active site in the enzyme. In addition, two corresponding iron(II) complexes are presented that differ in the coordination of a water molecule.
