Hypophosphatemia and decreased content of ATP, 2,3-DPG in erythrocytes were found in 147 patients operated upon organs of the abdominal cavity. Hypophosphatemia was more pronounced after operations for ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, acute pancreatitis and commissural ileus. An intravenous injection of potassium dihydrogen phosphate++ prevents the development of hypophosphatemia and concomitant decrease of the content of nonorganic phosphorus, ATP, 2,3-DPG in erythrocytes and may improve the postoperative period in these patients.

Erythrocyte deformability was studied by the filtration technique of Reid & Dormandy using whole blood and washed erythrocytes from insulin-dependent diabetics (IDD) under insulin delivery by an artificial pancreas (AP). The same technique was employed to study deformability in vitro using normal erythrocytes incubated in the presence of insulin. Results of this study show that in IDD the initially poor erythrocyte deformability is improved within hours of insulin administration.

Blood preservatives containing adenine for six week storage have been prepared with inosine and methylene blue at various pH levels in order to maintain, 23-DPG levels for immediate oxygen transport upon transfusion. In one experiment, the adverse effect of a high pH on ATP maintenance was demonstrated in the presence of methylene blue and inosine. In this and other experiments it was clear that ATP was better maintained in low pH preservatives and DPG better maintained in higher pH preservatives.
