The first asymmetric synthesis of 1,2-dioxolane-3-acetic acids is reported. Key features include the stereoselective opening of enantiomerically enriched oxetanes by hydrogen peroxide, conversion of the resulting 4-hydroperoxy-2-alkanols to 3-alkoxy-1,2-dioxolanes, and Lewis acid mediated homologation of the latter with a thioester silyl ketene acetal. The approach is modeled on 3,5-dimethyl-5-hexadecyl-1,2-dioxolane-3-acetic acid (1a), an unnamed natural product, and an optimized strategy is applied to the synthesis of four stereoisomers of plakinic acid A (2), allowing a configurational assignment of this incompletely characterized natural product.

Progress in biology has generated numerous lists of genes that share some property. But advancing from these lists of genes to understanding their roles is slow and unsystematic. Here we use RNA silencing in Caenorhabditis elegans to illustrate an approach for prioritizing genes for detailed study given limited resources.

A modular approach was developed for the first catalytic asymmetric total syntheses of naturally occurring C30 terpene quinone methides and their non-natural stereoisomers, which feature the presence of an unprecedented spiro[4.4]nonane-containing 6-6-6-5-5-3 hexacyclic skeleton. Resting on a chiral phosphinamide-catalyzed enantioselective reduction of 2,2-disubstituted cyclohexane-1,3-dione, a concise route for the synthesis of enantioenriched 6-6 bicyclic fragment was developed.

Background: Our studies show that the small non-coding RNA, mir20a-3p, is neuroprotective for stroke in the acute phase and also attenuates long term cognitive decline in middle-aged female rats. Cognitive decline due to vascular diseases, such as stroke, is associated with secondary neurodegeneration in cortex and limbic structures. In this study, we assessed the volume of white matter, ventricles and regional diffusion-weighted MR imaging measures to delineate pathological tissue characteristics from the postmortem brain of stroke rats.

A series of chiral hybrid diphosphorus ligands incorporating a conformationally flexible tropos diphenylmethane-based phosphoramidite unit have been developed and evaluated in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-(1-arylvinyl)anilides and α-enamides, leading to up to >99% yield and 99% enantiomeric excess. Preliminary results from comparative studies showcased the extraordinary catalytic performance of these chiral tropos phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands, with a competency essentially superior to those of well-established ligands with a regular rigid backbone.

Expanded heterohelicene composing of alternating linearly and angularly fused multi-resonance (MR) skeleton has garnered wide interest for their promising narrowband emission. Herein, a pair of sym- and asym-expanded heterohelicene isomers are firstly developed by merging boron/oxygen (B/O)-embedded MR triangulene and indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole units via one-shot synthesis. Owing to the fully resonating extended helical skeleton, the target heterohelicenes exhibit significantly narrowed spectra bandwidth while emission red-shifting, thus affording deep-blue narrowband emission with peak at around 460 nm, full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of merely 18 nm and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields.
