Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Carbetocin compared to oxytocin in prevention of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after low-risk cesarean delivery (CD).

Search Strategy: Screening of Medline, Web Of Science, Scopus, Google scholar, and clinical trials registry till January 2024 using the key words related to carbetocin, blood loss, PPH, Cesarean section and their MeSH terms was done.

Selection Criteria: This study included all RCTs conducted on women with low risk for developing PPH after CD and compared the administration of carbetocin to oxytocin without any language limitation.

Intranasal oxytocin alleviates postsurgical pain and comorbid anxiety in mice: Participation of BK(Ca) channels in the hippocampus.

Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Fuzong Clinical Medical College (900th Hospital of the Joint Logistic Support Force), Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, Fujian, PR China.

The affective dimension in postsurgical pain is still poorly understood. Since neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) has been implicated in a broad spectrum of pain and negative emotion, we investigated the potential therapeutic effect of intranasal OXT on postsurgical pain and associated anxiety in a mice model of plantar incision. The role of large conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) (BK(Ca)) channels was explored by using behavioral pharmacology experiments.

An Implementation Research Study on Uterotonics Use Patterns and Heat-stable Carbetocin Acceptability and Safety for Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage in Nigeria.

Int J MCH AIDS

September 2024

Global Resources for Health West and Central Africa & Country Programs Nigeria, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Maitama, Abuja, Nigeria.

Background And Objective: The burden of maternal mortality attributable to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains high in Nigeria. Currently, oxytocin, and misoprostol, which are largely of suboptimal quality, are used for PPH prevention and treatment. Heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) is a viable uterotonic option for PPH prevention in a setting like Nigeria where compromised supply and cold chain systems result in the preponderance of poor-quality oxytocin and suboptimal PPH management.

Article Synopsis
  • Oxytocin is being studied as a potential treatment for psychostimulant use disorders, particularly its effects on dopamine signaling in the striatum, a brain region linked to natural rewards.
  • In a study involving male rhesus macaques, oxytocin was administered both intranasally and intravenously before administering methylphenidate, a stimulant similar to cocaine, and the impacts on dopamine release were monitored.
  • Results showed that oxytocin significantly decreased dopamine release in the dorsal striatum when stimulated by methylphenidate, suggesting oxytocin may be useful in treating addictions to psychostimulants.

Oxytocin Protects Against Corticosterone-Induced DA Dysfunction: An Involvement of the PKA/CREB Pathway.

Neurochem Res

November 2024

Research Center for Neuroscience, Institute of Molecular Biosciences, Mahidol University, Nakhon Pathom, 73170, Thailand.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic stress negatively affects dopamine transmission, leading to mood disorders and conditions like ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, and drug addiction, while oxytocin plays a role in social behaviors and can counteract stress effects.
  • - This study examined how oxytocin can protect against dopamine dysfunction caused by corticosterone in neuroblastoma cells, revealing that corticosterone reduces key signaling molecules related to dopamine function, but oxytocin can mitigate this dysfunction.
  • - The protective effect of oxytocin operates through activation of protein kinase A (PKA) and involves oxytocin receptors, providing insights into stress resilience and possible treatments for disorders linked to dopamine issues.
