Cortical windows for implant and cement removal during revision total elbow arthroplasty.

JSES Int

November 2024

Division of Hand and Upper-Extremity Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Geisinger MSKI, Danville, PA, USA.

Background: Revision total elbow arthroplasty (rTEA) remains a technically challenging procedure with potential for substantial morbidity. Cases involving excessively long cement mantles, removal of well-fixed implants or infected revisions requiring complete cement removal introduce additional technical challenges. Our purpose was to describe the outcomes, results, and complications associated with the use of cortical windows in rTEA.

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty in revision surgery-Indications and results.

PLoS One

January 2025

Division of Arthroscopic and special Joint Surgery / Sports Injuries, Department of Orthopedics, Trauma and Plastic Surgery, University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany.

Background: The number of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) procedures performed worldwide has increased over the last 10 years, with a corresponding increase in revision shoulder arthroplasty (SRSA). SRSA is often used for post-traumatic revision surgery in cases of infections and failure of anatomical prostheses. Data on outcomes with specific detail for each indication for the prosthetic solution as a secondary treatment are scarce, and inhomogeneous.

Endoprosthetic Reconstruction for Proximal Humerus Tumors.

Curr Rev Musculoskelet Med

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of California San Francisco, 500 Parnassus Ave MU-320W, San Francisco, CA, 94143-0728, USA.

Purpose Of The Review: Anatomic and reverse endoprosthetic reconstruction are two common surgical options used after tumor resection of the proximal humerus. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the functional outcomes and complications of modern anatomic and reverse endoprostheses.

Recent Findings: The anatomic endoprosthesis has traditionally been a successful reconstructive technique as it provided a stable platform upon which the hand and elbow could function.

Background: Massive proximal humeral bone loss (PHBL) poses a technical challenge during reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Surgical treatment strategies include allograft-prosthetic composite (APC) reconstructions, endoprostheses, and other reverse shoulder arthroplasty constructs; however, there is a paucity of literature summarizing the outcomes and complications unique to this complex patient population. This study aimed to systematically review the literature to evaluate (1) patient-reported outcome measures, (2) functional outcomes, and (3) complications according to surgical treatment strategy for patients with massive PHBL who undergo primary or revision shoulder arthroplasty.
