In patients with bipolar disorder antipsychotics are frequently used for the treatment of acute manic episodes, either in monotherapy, in addition to a mood stabilizer or in patients refractory to lithium or other mood stabilizers. However, a number of studies demonstrated that the use of conventional neuroleptics is restricted -- particularly for long-term treatment and relapse prevention in bipolar disorder -- due to their side effect profile and their potential to induce or worsen depressive symptoms. In contrast, atypical antipsychotics have a better tolerability profile and fewer extrapyramidal side effects. A number of clinical studies showed that the atypical antipsychotic risperidone was effective and well tolerated in the treatment of bipolar mania. This was reported both for the treatment of acute episodes and for the maintenance therapy. Recent data suggest that risperidone can be used effectively either in addition to or even instead of a mood stabilizer. This review summarizes the available literature on risperidone in the treatment of bipolar disorders.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and mania. Lithium is the gold standard pharmacotherapy for BD, but outcomes are variable, and the relevant therapeutic mechanisms underlying successful treatment response remain uncertain. To identify synaptic markers of BD and lithium response, we measured the effects of lithium on induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons from BD patients and controls.

Background: Voice analysis has emerged as a potential biomarker for mood state detection and monitoring in bipolar disorder (BD). The systematic review aimed to summarize the evidence for voice analysis applications in BD, examining (1) the predictive validity of voice quality outcomes for mood state detection, and (2) the correlation between voice parameters and clinical symptom scales.
Methods: A PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library search was carried out by two investigators for publications investigating voice quality in BD according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statements.
