AI Article Synopsis

  • A 7-year-old boy experienced psychosocial issues due to aplasia of the left auricle, which was a part of a condition called VATER association.
  • Doctors opted for a focused treatment approach by creating an auricle prosthesis that could be securely attached with adhesive.
  • After wearing the prosthesis, the boy showed significant improvement in his confidence and social behavior.

Article Abstract

A nearly 7-year-old boy suffered from psychosocial problems because of aplasia of the left auricle. The auricle aplasia was a symptom of the VATER association. It was decided to conduct a purely problem-oriented treatment in preparing an auricle prosthesis, firmly fixed using an adhesive. Wearing the auricle prosthesis, the boy improved very quickly and substantially in being more free and self-confident.

Introduction: The tympanic cavity contains three tiny bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes, which have a fundamental role in the transmission of sound. Recent research emphasizes the use of CBCT for the anatomic study of the temporal bone. The information about middle ear anatomy on CBCT scans is meager; hence, this retrospective study was conducted to identify and determine the various morphometrical parameters of the malleus using CBCT which can be helpful during reconstructive procedures for the otologic surgeon.

Background: Although Cochlear implantation (CI) is effective in restoring hearing for children with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss, it may influence the middle ear mechanics, potentially causing an air-bone gap and altering middle ear stiffness, which is not detected by traditional 226 Hz tympanometry.

Aims/objectives: To investigate the effect of mastoidectomy posterior tympanotomy (MPTA) on wideband absorbance (WBA) in children with CI.

Materials And Methods: The study included 20 normal-hearing children (normal group) and 10 children with CIs who underwent MPTA (CI-MPTA group), aged 3-10 years.

In this study, a method for determining the optimal location and orientation of an implantable piezoelectric accelerometer on the short process of the incus is presented. The accelerometer is intended to be used as a replacement for an external microphone to enable totally implantable auditory prostheses. The optimal orientation of the sensor and the best attachment point are determined based on two criteria-maximum pressure sensitivity sum and minimum loudness level sum.

Microtia profoundly affects patients' appearance and psychological well-being. Tissue engineering ear cartilage scaffolds have emerged as the most promising solution for ear reconstruction. However, constructing tissue engineering ear cartilage scaffolds requires multiple passaging of chondrocytes, resulting in their dedifferentiation and loss of their special phenotypes and functions.

To investigate the occurrence and managements of poor recovery after total endoscopic middle ear surgery. A total of 302 cases(315 ears) who underwent endoscopic middle ear surgery in our hospital from June 2020 to June 2021 were collected. Follow up by means of endoscopy, pure tone hearing threshold, tympanogram was conducted at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after surgery to analyze the incidence, possible causes, treatment strategies and effects of poor results tympanic membrane healing and hearing recovery.
