Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is well-known risk factor for cardiac embolic events, especially cerebrovascular events. The association between AF and lipid markers was evaluated. Among all these markers, lipoprotein(a), or (Lp(a), was also investigated. The aim of our study was to evaluate the characteristics of the lipid profile in patients with AF, focusing on Lp(a) levels.

Material/methods: One hundred and one patients with AF were included in the study group. We used 101 patients without AF, matched by sex and age with the study group, as the control group. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, Lp(a), and the LDL/HDL, COL/LDL, and COL/HDL indexes were measured. The study was performed in Spain with a Caucasian population.

Results: Among all the variables included there was statistical difference only between groups in the COL/HDL index, showing a greater value in the group of patients with AF. No difference was found in Lp(a) levels between the groups.

Conclusions: Although some studies have tried to show a possible relationship between AF and high Lp(a) levels, we found no such relationship in our study, although ethnic differences could explain, at least in part, these results in our patients when compared with other ethnic populations.

Using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), it is possible to show chemical composition of materials and / or profile chemical changes occurring in tissues, cells, and body fluids during onset and progression of diseases. For diagnostic application, the use of blood would be the most appropriate in biospectroscopy studies since, (i) it is easily accessible and, (ii) enables frequent analyses of biochemical changes occurring in pathological states. At present, different studies have investigated potential of serum, plasma and sputum being alternative biofluids for lung cancer detection using FTIR.

Research has shown various hydrolyzed proteins possessed beneficial physiological functions; however, the mechanism of how hydrolysates influence metabolism is unclear. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the effects of different sources of protein hydrolysates, being the main dietary protein source in extruded diets, on metabolism in healthy adult dogs. Three complete and balanced extruded canine diets were formulated: control chicken meal diet (CONd), chicken liver and heart hydrolysate diet (CLHd), mechanically separated chicken hydrolysate diet (CHd).

E-cigarette/vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) is strongly associated with vitamin E acetate and often occurs with concomitant tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use. To uncover pathways associated with EVALI, we examined cytokines, transcriptomic signatures, and lipidomic profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from THC-EVALI patients. At a single center, we prospectively enrolled mechanically ventilated patients with EVALI from THC-containing products (N = 4) and patients with non-vaping acute lung injury and airway controls (N = 5).

Microalgae, have emerged as a potentially promising feed additive option due to their beneficial nutritional profile rich in bioactive compounds. The present study examines the incorporation of Chlorella sorokiniana (at 0.1% and 1%) into chicken feed compared to control feed and its effect on growth and health parameters of poultry grown at pilot plant scale.

Safflower ( L.) is a valuable oil crop due to its bioactive ingredients and high linoleic acid content, which contribute to its antioxidant properties and potential for preventing atherosclerosis. Current research on safflower focuses on understanding the biosynthesis of seed oil through omics strategies, yet there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge of the dynamic changes in lipids and the regulatory mechanisms during seed development.
