Background: Intraprostatic PSMA targeted prodrugs/protoxins are under development in our laboratory. Future toxicologic studies of these therapies require identification of animal models that express PSMA within the prostate.
Method: PSMA enzymatic activity and protein expression was determined. PSMA expression in the prostates of mouse, dog, and monkey were compared to humans by real-time PCR analysis.
Results: No substrate hydrolysis was observed in dog or monkey prostate homogenates. Monkey prostate was negative for PSMA protein expression. No significant PSMA mRNA levels were detected by real time PCR in mouse, dog, or monkey prostate tissue compared to PSMA negative tissues.
Conclusions: PSMA is not expressed in any significant amount in the prostates of mouse, beagle dog, or macaque monkeys in this study but is expressed in high levels by human prostate. These non-human species, therefore, are not suitable toxicologic models to assess prostate damage from PSMA-activated intraprostatic prodrug/protoxin therapies.

Studies have suggested animals as possible reservoir hosts for flaviviruses transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes; however, there is limited evidence for the dengue virus in Malaysia. One of the possible ways to determine the zoonotic potential for any pathogen transmission is through blood meal analysis which can provide valuable insights into the feeding preferences of the mosquitoes. Unfortunately, limited information is available on the feeding preferences of Aedes mosquitoes in Malaysia.

Local health departments can play a critical role in zoonoses surveillance at the human-domestic animal interface, especially when existing public health services and close relationships with community groups can be leveraged. Investigators at Harris County Veterinary Public Health employed a community-based surveillance tool for identifying severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in dogs and cats in June--December 2021. Diagnosis was made using both RT-qPCR testing of oral and nasal swabs and plaque reduction neutralization testing of serum samples.

During recent years, much progress has been made in understanding the origin and evolution of the dog. Thanks to the collaboration between zooarchaeology, genomics and paleogenetics, researchers were able to hypothesize scenarios regarding the origins of the canine lineages present in Europe at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene. Research has also shown a correlation between human and canine migration across time and space, highlighting a strong relationship between man and his best friend.

RA-0002034 () is a potent covalent inhibitor targeting the alphavirus nsP2 cysteine protease. The species-dependent pharmacokinetics and metabolism of were investigated to evaluate its therapeutic potential. Pharmacokinetic profiling revealed rapid clearance in mice, predominantly mediated by glutathione -transferase (GST)-catalyzed conjugation.

The objective of this study was to tailor an osteoinductive scaffold for alveolar bone regeneration and around immediately placed implants in extraction sockets of dogs. Tailored amorphous multiporous bioactive glass (TAMP -BG) was prepared and characterized for bioactivity and response of human alveolar bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hABMSCs). Extraction sockets of twenty-two male mongrel dogs received TAMP-BG in the right side around implant in the distal socket of the mandibular fourth premolar (P4), while the adjacent empty mesial socket of the same tooth was filled with the same graft.
