We investigated the dependency of electrical seizures produced by cortical undercut upon behavioral states of vigilance in chronically implanted cats. Experiments were performed 1-12 weeks after white matter transection. Multisite field potentials and intracellular activity were recorded from suprasylvian and marginal gyri. Paroxysmal activity developed within days and consisted of spike-wave complexes at 3-4 Hz occurring during the waking state (correlated with eye movements), being enhanced during slow-wave sleep (SWS) and blocked during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Prolonged hyperpolarizing events were seen not only during SWS (which is the case in normal animals) but also during both waking and REM, thus resulting in bimodal distribution of the membrane potential in all 3 natural states of vigilance. The increased synchrony of field potential activity expressed by shorter time of propagation over the cortical surface and the tendency toward generalization are ascribed to changes in intrinsic neuronal properties and potential disinhibition following cortical undercut.

Thrombospondins (TSPs) are astrocyte-secreted extracellular matrix proteins that play key roles as regulators of synaptogenesis in the central nervous system. We previously showed that TSP1/2 are upregulated in the partial neocortical isolation model ("undercut" or "UC" below) of posttraumatic epileptogenesis and may contribute to abnormal axonal sprouting, aberrant synaptogenesis and epileptiform discharges in the UC cortex. These results led to the hypothesis that posttraumatic epileptogeneis would be reduced in TSP1/2 knockout (TSP1/2 KO) mice.

Purpose: The extraction of impacted mandibular third molar is associated with various types of intraoperative and postoperative complications, one of them is injury to lingual nerve. The present study aims to assess and correlate the variation in lingual cortical plate thickness with different angulations and determine the topographic relationship between the root apex of impacted mandibular third molar and lingual cortical plate using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Methods: This prospective cohort study enrolled 140 patients with impacted mandibular third molars who underwent preoperative CBCT imaging.

Objective: Dental implant procedure is the most common way to restore missing teeth but also comes with several complications. Success rates for dental implants are expected to be good when proper diagnosis and planning, study of bone morphology and closeness of implant with vital structures, such as nerves and blood vessels, are made pre-surgery.

Patients And Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 636 adult patients, aged 18-80 years old, that came for dental implants in screening clinics or referred to specialty clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the year 2019 to 2020.

Objective: Effective treatment for the prevention of posttraumatic epilepsy is still not available. Here, we sought to determine whether blocking receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) or toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathways would prevent posttraumatic epileptogenesis.

Methods: In a mouse undercut model of posttraumatic epilepsy, daily injections of saline, RAGE monoclonal antibody (mAb), or TAK242, a TLR4 inhibitor, were made for 1 week.

This chapter brings the powerful conceptual tools of the science of parallel distributed processing (PDP) to bear on the cognitive neuroscience of emotions discussed in this book. Cerebral representations are encoded as patterns of activity involving billions of neurons. PDP across these neuronal populations provides the basis for a number of emergent properties: (1) processing occurs and knowledge (long term memories) is stored (as synaptic connection strengths) in exactly the same networks; (2) networks have the capacity for setting into stable attractor states corresponding to concepts, symbols, implicit rules, or data transformations; (3) networks provide the scaffold for the acquisition of knowledge, but knowledge is acquired through experience; (4) PDP networks are adept at incorporating the statistical regularities of experience as well as frequency and age of acquisition effects; (5) networks enable content-addressable memory; (6) because knowledge is distributed throughout networks, they exhibit the property of graceful degradation; (7) networks intrinsically provide the capacity for inference.
