Objective: To ascertain whether initial depression of conscious level in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is related to hyperosmolality, acidosis or other factors.
Methods: In 225 episodes of DKA without evidence of cerebral edema, we examined the relationship between conscious level and initial biochemical variables. We contrasted these findings with those in 42 children who later developed cerebral oedema.
Results: On admission, 42/225 (19%) had mild (pH 7.26-7.35); 96 (44%) moderate (pH 7.11-7.25); and 80 (37%) severe DKA (pH
Conclusions: In children with DKA, initial conscious level is closely related to pH and weakly to age, but not to BG or plasma sodium level. Thus cerebral function in DKA is related to severity of acidosis even when there is no evidence of cerebral edema.

Background: Caesarean section (CS) is the most common inpatient surgical procedure performed in Canada. CS is known to cause moderate-to-severe pain, which is suggested to be associated with postpartum depression and persistent pain. Existing limitations in multimodal analgesia and conscious attempts to avoid opioids highlight the need for non-pharmacological strategies.

Objective The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is widely used to assess the levels of consciousness. This study examined whether or not the initial GCS score could be a marker of the length of hospital stay (LOS) in patients with thyroid storm. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 29 patients with thyroid storm in our hospital between January 2010 and December 2023.

Introduction: Psychedelic-induced experiences are thought to play an important role in the therapeutic actions of rapid-acting antidepressants. General anesthesia is one scenario in which patients can be rendered unconscious and masked to the psychedelic treatment, providing a simple yet effective method to examine drug-induced changes in the brain devoid of experiences.
Methods: Chronically stressed adult C57/BL6 male mice were given subhypnotic ketamine alone or ketamine and GABAergic anesthetic isoflurane at sedative (0.

Introduction: Depression is the most common mental illness among older adults, with substantial and persistent mood depression as the main clinical feature, which is unfavorable for improvement. The clinical manifestations can range from melancholy to grief or even numbness. Approximately one-third of older adult patients exhibit physical discomfort as the first symptom; dysgeusia as the first symptom, is very rare in clinical practice.
