As a first step toward modeling the interaction of dissolved actinide contaminants with mineral surfaces, we studied low-coverage adsorption of aqueous uranyl, UO2(2+), on the hydroxylated alpha-Al2O3(0001) surface. We carried out density functional periodic slab model calculations and modeled solvation effects by explicit aqua ligands. We explored the formation of both inner- and outer-sphere complexes and estimated the corresponding adsorption energies. Effects of solvation were accounted for by explicit consideration of the first hydration shell of uranyl and by means of a posteriori corrections for long-range solvent effect. With energetics described at the GGA-PW91 level and under the assumption of a fully protonated ideal surface, we predict a weakly bound outer-sphere adsorption complex.

This study investigated the effects of non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) treatment on the growth, chemical composition, and biological activity of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L'Herit) leaves. NTAP was applied at a frequency of 13.56 MHz, exposure time of 15 s, discharge temperature of 25 °C, and power levels (T1 = 50, T2 = 80, and T3 = 120 W).

Collagen stroma interactions within the extracellular microenvironment of breast tissue play a significant role in breast cancer, including risk, progression, and outcomes. Hydroxylation of proline (HYP) is a common post-translational modification directly linked to breast cancer survival and progression. Changes in HYP status lead to alterations in epithelial cell signaling, extracellular matrix remodeling, and immune cell recruitment.

Two-in-one strategy to enhance the stability of TiCT in transition metal ion solutions.

Although MXenes have attracted significant attention across diverse fields, they exhibit a pronounced susceptibility to oxidation in aqueous environments, with oxidation significantly accelerated in the presence of transition metal ions (TMI) such as Fe and Cu. This limitation impedes the synthesis of transition metal compounds/MXene-based composites and their potential for functional applications. In this study, we elucidate the mechanism of accelerated oxidation of TiCT is that Fe promotes the electron loss in TiCT, thus leading to an increased production of hydroxyl radicals (OH) to oxidize TiCT.

Macrophages have emerged as promising cellular vehicles for the delivery of therapeutic agents to tumor sites. However, the cytotoxicity of therapeutic agents toward the cellular carriers and the effective release of therapeutic agents at the tumor site remain the main challenges faced by macrophage-mediated drug delivery systems. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR)-triggered release of self-accelerating cascade nanoreactor (HCFG) delivered by macrophages (HCFG@R) was developed for synergistic tumor photothermal therapy (PTT)/starvation therapy (ST)/chemodynamic therapy (CDT).

Discarded floral foam as a source for green preparation of sustainable adsorbent for quick and efficient removal of phenoxyacetic acid herbicides from waters.

College of the Environment and Ecology, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China; Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory for Coastal Ecology and Environmental Studies, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China. Electronic address:

Due to the high toxicity and increasing consumption, efficient removal of phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (PAAHs) from water is imperative. In current study, a new adsorbent was prepared by modifying porous carbon derived from disused floral foam with chitosan (CS) (ACFC). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation uncovered that the amino and hydroxyl groups in the introduced CS played a critical role in the efficient adsorption of ACFC towards PAAHs.
