It is well known that a system weakly coupled to a heat bath is described by the canonical ensemble when the composite S + B is described by the microcanonical ensemble corresponding to a suitable energy shell. This is true for both classical distributions on the phase space and quantum density matrices. Here we show that a much stronger statement holds for quantum systems. Even if the state of the composite corresponds to a single wave function rather than a mixture, the reduced density matrix of the system is canonical, for the overwhelming majority of wave functions in the subspace corresponding to the energy interval encompassed by the microcanonical ensemble. This clarifies, expands, and justifies remarks made by Schrödinger in 1952.

Onset of quantum thermalization in the Jahn-Teller model.

Phys Rev E

We investigate the onset of quantum thermalization in a system governed by the Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian, which describes the interaction between a single spin and two bosonic modes. We find that the Jahn-Teller model exhibits a finite-size quantum phase transition between the normal phase and two types of super-radiant phase when the ratios of spin-level splitting to each of the two bosonic frequencies grow to infinity. We test the prediction of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in the Jahn-Teller model.

Random Transitions of a Binary Star in the Canonical Ensemble.

Entropy (Basel)

September 2024

Laboratoire de Physique Théorique, Université de Toulouse, CNRS, UPS, 31062 Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of self-gravitating systems, focusing on a binary star model with two gravitationally interacting particles in a confined space.
  • It identifies a negative specific heat region in the microcanonical ensemble, which transitions to a first-order phase transition in the canonical ensemble, indicating complex energy states in the system.
  • Using a Langevin equation, the research explores the transitions between 'dilute' and 'condensed' states of the particles, developing a Fokker-Planck approach to understand metastable states and their lifetimes based on energy barriers.

Microcanonical Monte Carlo of Lennard-Jones microclusters.

J Chem Phys

September 2024

Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio 44115, USA.

A novel statistical mechanical methodology is applied to clusters of N ≤ 7 atoms. Exact statistical analogs for any energy derivative of entropy ∂mS/∂Em are used in rigorous microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations to vastly enlarge the pool of measurable thermodynamic properties relative to previous work. All analogs are given for two alternative partition functions of the microcanonical ensemble.

Small systems consisting of a few particles are increasingly technologically relevant. In such systems, an intense debate in microcanonical statistical mechanics has been about the correctness of Boltzmann's surface entropy versus Gibbs' volume entropy. Both entropies have shortcomings─while Boltzmann entropy predicts unphysical negative/infinite absolute temperatures for small systems with an unbounded energy spectrum, Gibbs entropy entirely disallows negative absolute temperatures, in disagreement with experiments.

Ensemble Inequivalence in Long-Range Quantum Systems.

Ensemble inequivalence, i.e., the possibility of observing different thermodynamic properties depending on the statistical ensemble which describes the system, is one of the hallmarks of long-range physics, which has been demonstrated in numerous classical systems.
