Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) was combined with heat capacity measurements to probe changes of electronic structure and superconductivity in Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2). A simultaneous decrease of EELS intensity from sigma-band hole states and the magnitude of the sigma gap was observed with increasing x, thus verifying that band filling results in the loss of strong superconductivity. These quantities extrapolated to zero at x approximately 0.33 as inferred from the unit cell volume. However, superconductivity was not quenched completely, but persisted with T(c) < 7 K up to about x approximately 55. Only the pi band had detectable density of states for 0.33 < or =x < or = 0.55, implying an inversion of the two-band hierarchy of MgB(2) in that regime. Since pi-band superconductivity is active in other materials such as intercalated graphite, implications for new materials with high T(c) are discussed.

Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is an important physiological index to evaluate the photosynthetic capacity and growth health of crops. In this investigation, the focus was placed on the chlorophyll content per unit of leaf area (LCC) and the chlorophyll content per unit of fresh weight (LCC) during the tuber formation phase of potatoes in Northern Shaanxi. Ground-based hyperspectral data were acquired for this purpose to formulate the vegetation index.

We investigate the effects of non-magnetic disorder in a hybridized two-dimensional two-orbital s-wave superconductor (SC) model. The situation in which electronic orbitals overlap such that the hybridizationVi,jamong them is antisymmetric, under inversion symmetry, was taken into account. The on-site disorder is given by a random impurity potential.

We study the effect of interelectron Coulomb interactions on the displacement field induced topological phase transition in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré heterobilayers. We find a nematic excitonic insulator phase that breaks the moiré superlattice's threefold rotational symmetry and preempts the topological phase transition in both AA and AB stacked heterobilayers when the interlayer tunneling is weak, or when the Coulomb interaction is not strongly screened. The nematicity originates from the frustration between the nontrivial spatial structure of the interlayer tunneling, which is crucial to the existence of the topological Chern band, and the interlayer coherence induced by the Coulomb interaction that favors uniformity in layer pseudospin orientations.

Two-dimensional room-temperature Janus ferrovalley semiconductors with large spin, valley and piezoelectric polarizations provide fertile platforms for designing multifunctional nanodevices. Little research has been reported to date on such materials. Here, using first-principles calculations, we predict two dynamically stable Janus titanium chalcohalide (TiSCl and TiSeBr) monolayers, which are excellent piezoelectric ferrovalley semiconductors with in-plane magnetization and high magnetic transition temperatures (738 and 884 K).

As the major nutrient affecting crop growth, accurate assessing of nitrogen (N) is crucial to precise agricultural management. Although improvements based on ground and satellite data nitrogen in monitoring crops have been made, the application of these technologies is limited by expensive costs, covering small spatial scales and low spatiotemporal resolution. This study strived to explore an effective approach for inversing and mapping the distributions of the canopy nitrogen concentration (CNC) based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral image data in a typical apple orchard area of China.
