In electrohydrodynamic convection of nematics, excitation with sine or square waves of period T leads to convection structures in which the charge density, director, and velocity fields perform T-periodic oscillations. Nonconventional waveforms such as sawtooth excitation can lead to patterns with T-periodic as well as T-antiperiodic (subharmonic) dynamics. We consider different classes of excitation fields E(t): such with antisymmetry in the two half periods E(t)=-E(t+T/2), such with time inversion symmetry E(t)=E(-t), and dichotomous waveforms (two alternating values E1, E2) and discuss their influence on the pattern dynamics. From the analysis of linear differential equations that describe the system near threshold, we show analytically that each of these conditions inhibits subharmonic dynamics at onset. Numerical and experimental support of these predictions is provided.

We have carried out spectral analysis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) notifications in all 47 prefectures in Japan. The results confirm that the power spectral densities (PSDs) of the data from each prefecture show exponential characteristics, which are universally observed in the PSDs of time series generated by nonlinear dynamical systems, such as the susceptible/exposed/infectious/recovered (SEIR) epidemic model. The exponential gradient increases with the population size.

Introduction: Vocal distortion, also known as a scream or growl, is used worldwide as an essential technique in singing, especially in rock and metal, and as an ethnic voice in Mongolian singing. However, the production mechanism of vocal distortion is not yet clearly understood owing to limited research on the behavior of the larynx, which is the source of the distorted voice.
Objectives: This study used high-speed digital imaging (HSDI) to observe the larynx of professional singers with exceptional singing skills and determine the laryngeal dynamics in the voice production of various vocal distortions.

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case.

Complex behavior in nonlinear dynamical systems often arises from resonances, which enable intricate energy transfer mechanisms among modes that otherwise would not interact. Theoretical, numerical and experimental methods are available to study such behavior when the resonance arises among modes of the linearized system. Much less understood are, however, resonances arising from nonlinear modal interactions, which cannot be detected from a classical linear analysis.
