Increased survival from cancer has been a result of improved treatment and the earlier detection of cancer. This column will provide a focus on wellness for patients with cancer, their caretakers, and health professionals. This inaugural column provides a review of a basic epidemiologic principle--risk assessment, which is central to wellness.

Ischemic ulcers due to compromised microcirculation of the lower limbs cause painful ulcers that pose a challenge for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Livedoid vasculopathy, calciphylaxis, and Martorell's hypertensive ischemic ulcer are part of this group and present some similarities due to microvascular occlusive impairment. They are often misdiagnosed as inflammatory ulcers such as pyoderma gangrenosum and vasculitis.

Background: Severe maternal outcome (SMO) encompasses women who survive life-threatening conditions either by chance or due to treatment quality, or who die. This concept assumes that severe maternal morbidity predicts mortality risk, enabling the analysis of risk factors for life-threatening outcomes and improving our understanding on the causes of maternal death. This study aims to determine the incidence of SMO and its leading causes in East Gojjam during a period of regional conflict.

Background: Liver fibrosis represents a serious risk to global health by impairing quality of life and elevating the chances of hepatocellular carcinoma, while the intricate role of autophagy can either alleviate or worsen fibrosis depending on its functioning.
Objective: Herein, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of chlorogenic acid in CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis and explore the autophagy pathway as the possible molecular target of chlorogenic acid.
Methods: Rats were injected with carbon tetrachloride (1ml/kg) to induce liver fibrosis for 10 weeks.

Background: Postoperative complications in body contouring surgery have been linked to several factors, including body mass index, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and skin resection weight. Prior weight loss by surgical means is another predisposing factor for postoperative complications following body contouring. This study aims to examine these previously identified variables, and several others, in the context of a spectrum of abdominal body contouring techniques following bariatric surgery.
