Plant enzymes often present advantages in the synthesis of natural products with specific configurations. Farnesene is a pharmacologically active sesquiterpene with three natural Z/E configurations, among which the enzyme selectively responsible for the biosynthesis of (3Z,6E)-α-farnesene remains elusive. Herein, a sesquiterpene synthase TwSTPS1 biosynthesizing (3Z,6E)-α-farnesene as the major product was identified from Taxus wallichiana through genome mining.

Article Synopsis
  • A new bicyclo[3.3.1]nonadienemethanol-type lignan called 9,9'-oxidolanceolatanin B, along with four known lignans, was isolated from Zucc. leaves through a study focusing on α-glucosidase inhibition.
  • The structure of 9,9'-oxidolanceolanceolatanin B was determined using NMR spectroscopy and ECD data.
  • All isolated compounds exhibited stronger α-glucosidase inhibitory effects than the standard drug acarbose, suggesting that Zucc. leaves may be a valuable source for developing plant-based anti-diabetic treatments.

Litter layer, serving as the "skin" of forest soil, plays a crucial role in conserving water resources and maintaining soil and water conservation. We analyzed the relationship of tree species richness, community weighted mean traits, and functional diversity with the standing mass, maximum water holding rate, and effective water sto-rage capacity of litters from various tree species including , , , , , , , and their combinations of mixed forests in subtropical region. The results showed that across various tree species combinations, the ranges of maximum water holding rate, standing litter mass and effective water storage capacity of undecomposed layer were 0-419%, 0-0.

Taxus plants are the exclusive source of paclitaxel, an anticancer drug with significant medicinal and economic value. Interspecies hybridization and gene introgression during evolution have obscured distinctions among Taxus species, complicating their phylogenetic classification. While the chloroplast genome of Taxus wallichiana, a widely distributed species in China, has been sequenced, its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) remains uncharacterized.

Background: In the intricate tapestry of food security, wild food species stand as pillars, nourishing millions in low-income communities, and reflecting the resilience and adaptability of human societies. Their significance extends beyond mere sustenance, intertwining with cultural traditions and local knowledge systems, underscoring the importance of preserving biodiversity and traditional practices for sustainable livelihoods.

Methods: The present study, conducted between February 2022 and August 2023 along the Line of Control in India's Kashmir Valley, employed a rigorous data collection encompassing semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and specific field observations facilitated through a snowball sampling technique.
