The genetic heterogeneity among Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates obtained from apparently healthy cattle and sheep was investigated by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. A total of 348 Campylobacter isolates, consisting of C. jejuni (n = 218) and C. coli (n = 130), were analysed. All these isolates were successfully typed by RAPD analysis. The total numbers of band patterns defined by RAPD in cattle and sheep were 42 and 45, respectively. Of the 42 distinct types obtained from cattle, 37 types were observed in C. jejuni isolates (n = 115), and the remaining 5 were in C. coli isolates (n = 30). Of 45 distinct types obtained from sheep, 21 types were observed in C. jejuni isolates (n = 103), and 24 were in C. coli isolates (n = 100). It was concluded that a high degree of heterogeneity existed among the C. jejuni and C. coli isolates of healthy cattle and sheep.

Background: Akabane virus (AKAV) is an arthropod-borne virus that causes congenital malformations and neuropathology in cattle and sheep. In South Korea, AKAVs are classified into two main genogroups: K0505 and AKAV-7 strains. Human brucellosis is a re-emerging disease in Sichuan Province, China. Small abandoned mining areas of Fe and Mn oxides located in the Portuguese sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW of Europe) have been converted into agrosilvopastoral systems with very few environmental management measures after their closure. Although at the landscape scale, no visible differences were observed between the former mining intervention areas and adjacent areas, it is essential to assess the state and environmental risk of the soil-plant system, especially in the herbaceous pastures grazed by domestic animals. This was carried out in the Ferragudo mining area, where an agrosilvopastoral system, composed of holm oak and dryland pasture, had been established after the closure of the mine at ≈45 years.

Paeniclostridium sordellii is responsible for severe infections in horses, cattle, and sheep, however, conventional vaccines exhibit limitations in production and immunogenicity. This study assessed the immunogenicity of a recombinant bacterin composed of a chimera (rQTcsHL) that combines segments from the lethal (TcsL) and hemorrhagic (TcsH) toxins in mice and sheep. Both immunized animal groups exhibited elevated levels of IgG, with the mice demonstrating moderate protection (<50 %) against lethal challenges, comparable to that of the conventional vaccine.
