Nat Clin Pract Urol

Department of Urology, Inönü University Medical Faculty, Turgut Ozal Medical Center, Malatya, Turkey.

Published: July 2005

Background: A 56-year-old male with bilateral flank pain was admitted following diagnosis of bilateral kidney stone disease. He had previously undergone four separate pyelolithotomy sessions (two per kidney), the latest being 14 years prior. At presentation the patient had two stones in the right kidney and seven in the left kidney. The right renal pelvis was dilated, indicating obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction.

Investigations: Plain radiography, ultrasonography, intravenous pyelography, retrograde ureteropyelography and spiral tomography.

Diagnosis: Bilateral kidney stones and obstruction of the right ureteropelvic junction.

Management: Bilateral percutaneous nephrolithotomy and simultaneous right endopyelotomy; intraoperative antegrade nephrogram; preoperative and postoperative measurement of hemoglobin, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine; postoperative nephrostograms, plain X-ray, diuretic renogram and intravenous pyelography.

Background: As ferroptosis is a key factor in renal fibrosis (RF), iron deposition monitoring may help evaluating RF. The capability of quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) for detecting iron deposition in RF remains uncertain.

Purpose: To investigate the potential of QSM to detect iron deposition in RF.

Departamento de Sanidad Animal, Facultad de Veterinaria, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Avda. Puerta de Hierro S/N, 28040, Madrid, Spain.

Background: In recent years, cases of leishmaniosis have been described in animals housed in captivity in zoos in Spain [Bennett's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus), orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygameus), and European otter (Lutra lutra)]. Some of these zoological parks are in endemic areas for both human and animal leishmaniosis, thus it should be very important to include this zoonosis in the differential diagnosis.

Methods: The study was carried out in two zoological parks in Madrid, Madrid Zoo and Faunia, and analyzed seven meerkats.
